Is Avalon Organics Vegan and Cruelty-Free?

Avalon Organics is a natural skincare brand that specializes in skin, hair, bath & body products made from pure, plant-based organic ingredients obtained from trustworthy sources.

If you want products certified from an environmental, safety, health, and ethical standpoint, Avalon Organics is a brand that is committed to being transparent, and so they are inducted in certified programs that force them to abide by certain strict criteria.

This is highly enticing from a consumer’s perspective (especially vegans) because we generally all want a brand that is transparent in every regard.

Avalon Organics does have vegan products, but can it be considered vegan?

How Vegan is Avalon Organics?

Avalon Organics is about 98% vegan, with the exception of four lip balms which are only considered vegetarian because they contain an animal ingredient called beeswax.

Other than that, the entire product line is comprised of vegan products.

Organic Beeswax

beeswax
Bees use wax to build combs to store honey and brood.

Organic beeswax is essentially beeswax that wasn’t tampered with as far as chemicals are concerned, which allows it to maintain a natural status.

That being said, it’s still not a vegan ingredient because it’s produced by bees. At the same time, it is a by-product of honey production, which has unethical implications.

For instance, industrial beekeepers are known to put into action different methods to ramp up honey production. That (not always) includes clipping off the wings of queen bees to prevent the worker bees from swarming. In other words, by keeping the queen bee immobilized, beekeepers prevent the worker bees from fleeing the colony and migrating elsewhere.

Put simply, this increases honey production and consequently, the profit a company can make.

However, there is a lot of debate about this topic, considering that not all beekeepers resort to unethical methods that harm bees. That said, beeswax is still produced by bees, and it cannot be considered vegan because of that.

Bottom line: Avalon Organics is not 100% vegan, but the GREAT MAJORITY of their products (with the exception of four products) are vegan. Compared to most brands out there, Avalon Organics is more ethical than most. While we can’t call it a vegan brand, it’s still VERY vegan-friendly.

Is Avalon Organics Cruelty-Free?

Avalon Organics is cruelty-free.

In other words, they do not test finished products or ingredients on animals, and neither do their suppliers or any third-party laboratories. In addition, Avalon Organics doesn’t sell any products in countries like China, where animal testing is required by law before being available to consumers.

Furthermore, Avalon Organics is both PETA-approved and Leaping Bunny certified.

This essentially means that Avalon Organics must abide by strict criteria (like implementing a Supplier Monitoring System) to remain a cruelty-free brand.

The Leaping Bunny Organization is a legitimate authority in animal testing, and they essentially were created to prevent brands from creating their own “cruelty-free” logos, which was ultimately frustrating because it gave brands some leeway to abide by their own definition of cruelty-free.

Therefore, yes, Avalon Organics is a truly cruelty-free brand!

Alternatives to Avalon Organics

We know that Avalon Organics is mostly vegan. However, it still sells a few products (four, to be exact) that contain an animal ingredient called beeswax. As a result, not every vegan might be willing to ride or die with Avalon Organics.

This is why we’re going to recommend a few vegan and cruelty-free brands that sell similar products to Avalon Organics. Here they are:

At the same time, If you don’t feel like these brands (and their products) don’t resonate with you, an awesome way to find incredible vegan beauty products is via vegan beauty boxes.

Verdict: Avalon Organics is not 100% Vegan.

Yes, Avalon Organics is not 100% vegan.

However, it’s hard to say that Avalon Organics is not vegan when they only have four products that contain animal ingredients. Other than that, every product is vegan.

On top of that, Avalon Organics is a leaping bunny certified, which means they abide by strict criteria to be considered authentically cruelty-free.

All in all, Avalon Organics is a highly ethical and conscious brand with great vegan products.
