How to Actually Order Vegan Food at In-N-Out Burger

The In-N-Out Burger is an American regional chain of fast-food restaurants located in California and in the Southwest. Unlike chains like Mcdonalds or Burger King, this fast-food chain doesn’t have franchises.

According to the information available on Wikipedia, In-N-Out Burger decided not to follow the franchising path because it would compromise quality in exchange for rapid growth.

Speaking of growth, In-N-Out Burger only has a few options on their menu.

According to their really short menu, the only vegan options available are:

  • French Fries
  • Coca-Cola
  • Diet Coke
  • 7UP
  • Dr. Pepper
  • Barq’s Root Beer
  • Pink Lemonade
  • Minute Maid Light Lemonade
  • Iced & Sweet Tea
  • and Coffee

They do not sell veggie burgers, but you can convert meat-based burgers into vegan burgers by asking them to remove the meat and the spread.

In this article, we’ll show you how to eat a vegan meal at In-N-Out Burger despite the limited options.

Are In-N-Out Burger’s Buns Vegan?

Fortunately, if you wish to order the buns and make a burger of your own, you’re able to do so because they’re actually vegan-friendly. In certain restaurants, the buns may contain eggs, but at In-N-Out Burger and other fast-food chains like Mcdonalds or Burger King, the buns are vegan-friendly.

In these buns, you can typically find the following ingredients: Enriched flour, water, sugar, vegetable oil, a small amount of salt, wheat gluten, as well as several dough conditioners and preservatives.

How to Actually Eat Vegan Food at In-N-Out Burger

The best way to have a legitimate vegan meal at In-N-Out Burger is by creating your own burger. Even though that’s not the sort of option you have on the menu, it’s still a request you can get through.

In-N-Out Burger sells three non-vegan burgers (which you can find on their website):

  • Hamburger
  • Cheeseburger
  • and Double-Double Cheeseburger

Every single one of these options contains meat, spread, and the last two contain cheese.

To make them vegan, you have to order them without those ingredients. Meat and cheese are obviously not vegan but spread also happens to be made with eggs. It’s basically a mayonnaise-like spread.

However, once you remove the meat (and cheese), you’re left with lettuce, onions, and tomato.

The spread can be replaced with either ketchup or mustard but it’s hard to find a solution for both the meat and cheese. Still, there’s something you can do to make your sandwich more enjoyable.

Bring Along Some Vegan Ingredients

This isn’t something most people are willing to do, but I know some crafty people that bring along certain ingredients, including seasonings such as nutritional yeast.

Nutritional Yeast Seasoning adds a cheesy and nutty flavor to foods.

It’s mostly used in salads, but provided you have lettuce, onions, and tomato in your sandwich, yeast seasoning is something that you can add to enhance the sandwich’s flavor.

You’re also free to bring along other ingredients such as vegan cheese, chorizo, or another meat substitute, but obviously, it’s not as practical as carrying a small bottle of seasoning.

Other Vegan Options

Once you have your sandwich, you can now order your side and beverage.

In-N-Out Burger only has one side that you can order: French Fries. 

However, that’s applicable to anyone, not just vegans. This fast-food restaurant is limited in the options they offer, so you won’t find a side salad or anything that’s remotely similar.

What’s not limited is the different drinks (or sodas) that you can order, which include:

  • Coca-Cola
  • Diet Coke
  • 7UP
  • Dr. Pepper
  • Barq’s Root Beer
  • Pink Lemonade
  • Minute Maid Light Lemonade
  • Iced & Sweet Tea
  • Coffee

Certainly, this isn’t the type of restaurant you’ll want to visit for a vegan meal, but even so, there’s still something you can have if you’re feeling extremely hungry.

Summary: In-N-Out Burger Is Not Vegan-Friendly

In-N-Out Burger, like many burger joints, is not vegan-friendly. 

In fact, the options are so limited that the only veggies you can find are lettuce, onions, and tomato.

You can still make a vegan sandwich with those ingredients, but it’s a poor sandwich nonetheless. For additional flavor, you can add either ketchup or mustard, but even so, it’s not super enjoyable.

To make the sandwich more appealing, I suggest bringing along nutritional yeast seasoning because of its cheese-like qualities. In my case, what I miss the most from a sandwich is the cheese, not the meat, and that’s something one can partly solve by bringing an ingredient from home (since it doesn’t have to be cooked).

Two Final Recommendations For My Fellow Vegans

Allow me to make two quick recommendations that have helped me in my vegan journey by ensuring I’m always healthy and deficiency-free.
