Want to Eat Vegan at Arby’s? Here’s How It’s Done

Arby’s is a fast-food sandwich restaurant chain with more than 3,300 restaurants across 7 different countries, including the United States.

It’s probably the restaurant that is furthest away from having legitimate vegan options.

According to VegNews, Arby’s tried to resist the rapid growth of plant-based meat from companies like Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods by launching “vegetables made from meat”.

Additionally, the company also came out and stated the following: “The chances we will bring plant-based menu items to our restaurants, now or in the future, are absolutely impossible.”

Needless to say, Arby’s is probably the last place you want to be at to eat vegan food.

Still, it’s not impossible to scrape up something and create a vegan meal to at least take care of your appetite. In this article, we’re going to go through the vegan-friendly options Arby’s has available for individuals like us, and I’m going to teach you how to make the best of your visit.

What Vegan Options Does Arby’s Have?

Like most non-vegan restaurants, it’s very difficult to find an exciting vegan option.

Among Arby’s many signature sandwiches, salads, and desserts, you won’t find a single vegan alternative. To create a vegan sandwich or wrap, you’d have to communicate with the workers to provide you with vegan bread, sides, and a suitable topping.

Is Arby’s Bread Vegan?

The Brioche Bun and Flatbread are not suitable for vegans. According to Arby’s Nutritional and Allergen Menu, those two types of bread contain milk.

The types of bread that don’t have any animal ingredients are the Honey Wheat Bread, the Artisan Wrap, and the Hearty Grain Wrap. You can order these and choose a set of different ingredients to create a sandwich or wrap, namely ones that you can find in some of the signature sandwiches or salads like lettuce and tomatoes.

Looking at Arby’s menu, it doesn’t have that many sides to make up a good sandwich.

Vegan Sides & Toppings

Here are the sides they have available on their menu:

  • Homestyle French Fries
  • French Toast Sticks
  • Curly Fries
  • Sauerkraut
  • Potato Cakes
  • Apple Slices
  • Apple Sauce

Indeed, there’s hardly anything you can order to include in a sandwich, wrap, or salad. However, you can still consider these when complementing your main dish.

Additionally, you can also add one or more of the following vegan-friendly dipping sauces:

  • Arby’s Sauce
  • Bronco Berry Sauce
  • Ketchup
  • Marinara Sauce (Not Robust Marinara)
  • Smoky Q Sauce

You can either use them to dip your potatoes or add some flavor to an improvised sandwich or wrap. In any case, they’re all vegan.

What About Arby’s Salads?

Side salads are never an exciting option, but most fast-food salads can be made vegan, including the ones at Arby’s. The ingredients in a Chopped Side Salad are  Iceberg Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, Cheddar Cheese (Shredded), and Tomatoes.

To make it vegan, you have to remove the cheese, but then you’re left with a simple salad.

Arby’s other salad option is the Chopped Farmhouse Salad. It contains either Turkey or Chicken, Pepper Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Iceberg Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, and Tomatoes. Upon removing the non-vegan ingredients, you’re left with another bland salad.

With that being said, you can certainly make a salad more interesting by including one of the vegan-friendly sauces we’ve mentioned above. If you’re not keen about that, then there’s also a way to make salads more “cheesy”, which I’ll also cover in this blog post.

This might be an interesting tip for those that love (vegan) cheese.

How to Eat Vegan at Arby’s

We’ve learned that there are essentially three types of vegan bread, one or two salads that can be converted into vegan salads, and seven different sides, including french fries.

If you want to have a fulfilling vegan meal at Arby’s, then the only way to ensure that is by mixing standalone ingredients.

You can either eat or drop the bread, but most times it’s the bread that fills up your appetite.

If you want to eat a sandwich, you have to pick the Honey Wheat Bread. Even though the name is counterintuitive, it’s completely vegan. If instead, you’d rather have a wrap, then consider the vegan-friendly wraps: the Artisan Wrap, and the Hearty Grain Wrap.

Once you pick between sandwich and wrap, you can then add the plant-based ingredients found in their salads: Iceberg Lettuce, Leaf Lettuce, and Tomatoes. Since most people typically don’t stuff the bread with french fries and potato bread, finishing it off with a topping like Arby’s sauce might be a good solution in terms of flavor.

Alternatively, you can skip the sandwich (or wrap) and stick with the salad.

Once you decided between both, you have a few sides that you can opt for to complement your “main” meal. Arby’s popular curly fries are delicious, and a good side to try out if you haven’t. To more easily curb your appetite, try out the potato cakes, as they’re quite robust.

The Little Known Secret That Makes Salads Delicious

While you can find some vegan options at Arby’s, aside from sides like french fries and potato cakes, you’re going to struggle if you’re often seeking a flavorsome meal.

That said, there’s a way to add an interesting flavor to a bland sandwich or salad. You can effectively do so by bringing your own nutritional yeast, which adds a compelling cheesy, nutty-like flavor to bland vegan foods in non-vegan restaurants.

Oftentimes you’ll have to surrender to what non-vegan restaurants have available for vegans (salads), so it’s difficult to have what’s considered a restaurant-worthy experience. To improve upon that experience, adding nutritional yeast to your salad or sandwich is definitely something you should try, especially if you’re constantly ending up in non-vegan spots.

Some people might feel awkward about carrying seasoning in their backpack or purse, but It’s certainly not as bad as paying non-vegan restaurants to have a lackluster meal.

Bottom Line: Arby’s Is Not Vegan-Friendly

Arby’s is not a vegan-friendly restaurant.

Even though you can find vegan options such as French Fries, Potato Cakes, and other basic foods, it’s not the type of restaurant that considers vegans. Most of the vegan ingredients happen to be so by accident, not because they’ve wished them to be.

In fact, Arby’s is what’s considered a meat haven, so it’s not as open to adding vegan or vegetarian options to their menu. Actually, the company has already stated that they won’t add any plant-based dishes to their menu, so that’s that.

In any case, you can still find some options at Arby’s, but you’ll be limited in what you can pick.

Two Final Recommendations For My Fellow Vegans
