Are you tagging along with your non-vegan friends to the Longhorn Steakhouse? I’m probably not breaking any news for you, but Longhorn is not the best place to have vegan food.
Just by having the name “steakhouse”, it’s clear that it’s not the ideal place for plant-eating humans to drop by. Still, it’s possible to find a few vegan options and scrap something together, and the same can be said for most non-vegan restaurants.
Allow me to get straight to the point though— you’re not going to find vegan main dishes or even desserts, you’ll have to stick to a couple of sides and fruits if you want to eat anything.
Vegan Options at Longhorn Steakhouse
Longhorn Steakhouse doesn’t have any veggie burgers or a seitan-based steak, but they have what you would expect to find in most restaurants: salad, bread, and a couple of sides.
Here are some of the vegan options you can find over there:
1. Mashed Potatoes (without butter)
Mashed potatoes are delicious, especially when served with a little olive oil. As someone who grew up on simple, non-exotic food, potatoes have always been part of my meals.
One thing to keep in mind though, don’t forget to request these without butter, apparently, they use butter in the process.
2. Loaded Idaho Baked Potato
The Loaded Idaho Baked Potatoes are yet another vegan-friendly option, but you have to steer clear of possible non-vegan toppings like sour cream, butter, cheese, or bacon.
One of the toppings available, however, is green onions. Those should be vegan.
3. Sweet Potato (without butter)
If you’d rather have healthier potatoes, sweet potatoes are the go-to option for anyone searching for carbohydrates with a lower glycemic index. If that’s not the case, you can always add some cinnamon sugar topping to make them taste even better.
Again, make sure that they don’t use any butter throughout the process, even though it shows that you have to confirm it as a topping online.
4. Seasoned French Fries
Needless to say, french fries are a common safe haven for vegans visiting non-vegan restaurants.
According to Longhorn’s allergen guide, the french fries are cooked in soybean oil, and they do seem to be vegan. Sometimes I hesitate, however. In certain restaurants, it’s possible that they may cook fries in the same fryer where the chicken was fried.
For some vegans, it’s a deal-breaker, but for many others, it’s not an issue.
5. Bread (Without butter)
Another vegan option available is Longhorn’s freshly baked bread. However, they don’t seem to have any vegan-friendly spreads. The only option under bread is butter, which isn’t vegan.
6. Mixed Green Salad
You’re also able to get a vegan salad if you avoid non-vegan ingredients, namely cheese, croutons, and salad dressings such as ranch, honey mustard, and blue cheese.
Not all is bad though. There’s always the legendary white balsamic vinaigrette.
7. Strawberry and Pecan Salad
Another side salad they have available is the Strawberry and Pecan Salad.
At $5.79, it’s their most expensive salad. Aside from the strawberries and pecans, the salad also comes with grapes and oranges.
It also comes with feta cheese but you have to ask them to remove it.
Don’t forget to avoid animal-based dressings like ranch, blue cheese, and honey mustard. Instead, you can always use the vegan-friendly dressings available which are raspberry vinaigrette and white balsamic vinaigrette.
8. Steamed Broccoli
Steamed broccoli is also part of the menu, and you can order it as a healthy side.
According to the allergen menu, they contain dairy, which is likely due to the use of butter, which you have to remind them not to use.
9. Steamed Asparagus
The same needs to be said about the Steamed Asparagus.
Before ordering your vegetables, always make sure no butter is being used. And take this brief advice to any non-vegan restaurant that you visit in the future.
But What About…
I understand that it might seem weird to not find any more options on the menu, especially when you look at the following names:
- Seasoned Rice Pilaf
- Crispy Brussels Sprouts
- and Crispy Texas Okra
Unfortunately, Seasoned Rice Pilaf is a recipe that usually involves cooking in stock or broth, more specifically chicken broth with spices and vegetables mixed in.
The Crispy Brussels Sprouts and Crispy Texas Okra are made using butter, which is essentially what provides them with their crispiness.
Trick to Get By At Longhorn Steakhouse
We’ve gone through Longhorn’s menu, and while there are some options available, it’s nothing deserving of a restaurant experience. However, there’s actually something you can do if you want to improve your experiences in non-vegan restaurants.
By bringing your own nutritional yeast, you’re able to add a cheesy, nutty flavor to bland salads, veggies, and other vegan-friendly options you may find at Longhorn Steakhouse.
Since eating at restaurants like this one requires you to eat vegetables and salads with absolutely no flavor (unless you’re fine with using vinegar), using nutritional yeast can change that, and improve your experience tremendously.
Whether or not you’ll feel awkward in doing so is a different story, but I’m sure there’s a bunch of wild-ish vegans out there that don’t mind bringing the extra seasoning.
I typically don’t visit this type of restaurant (even though I have friends that eat meat), but if I did, I’d definitely bring a discreet bottle of nutritional yeast with me.
Is the Longhorn Steakhouse Vegan-Friendly?
Longhorn Steakhouse is not a vegan-friendly restaurant. But, it’s not like it doesn’t have anything for vegans to eat. You have options, but they’re very limited.
But hey, what can you expect from a restaurant called Longhorn Steakhouse? The business is built on the basis that it needs meat to survive, so I doubt they’ll ever consider launching a solid vegan steak in the future. I hope I’m very mistaken, though.
With that said, I hope that this blog post has served you well. I have the feeling it’s something you were already expecting, but nevertheless, that confirms it.
