My Tofu Is Slimy: Is It Safe To Eat?

Have you ever taken a block of tofu out of the fridge to get started on dinner, and noticed that it feels odd? If the texture of your tofu is slimy, rather than soft and firm, you might be unsure about whether it is safe to eat.

Tofu that has turned slimy is not safe to eat. This sliminess indicates that the tofu is being attacked by bacteria and has started to break down. Eating the tofu could make you sick because you will be consuming the bacteria, which may result in nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and other unpleasant symptoms. Do not cook and eat slimy tofu.

In this article, we’ll check out why tofu goes slimy, what the sliminess means, and whether you can eat slimy tofu. We’ll also cover some of the other things that indicate that tofu has gone off so you know what to look out for.

Can You Eat Slimy Tofu?

You should not eat tofu that feels slimy under any circumstances. Tofu may be stored in a liquid, but once you lift it out and allow the liquid to drain off, it should feel firm and damp under your fingers – not remotely sticky or slimy. Sliminess indicates that the tofu has started to go off.

Many kinds of food turn slimy when they go off because the bacteria that have formed will begin attacking the food’s cells and breaking them down. This allows the bacteria to consume the nutrients, but it makes the food’s surface slimy because the cell walls have been breached and the liquids inside are leaking out.

You should therefore treat slimy tofu with great wariness. If you aren’t sure about a block of tofu, take it out of the liquid it sits in and set it on a plate to drain and dry out for a few minutes. When it has dried, wash your hands and gently touch the top of the block. It should not feel wet or slimy. A little dampness is fine.

If you’re still unsure, there are a few other things you should check for to determine whether the tofu is okay. These include:

  • Any discoloration: if your tofu is brown, tan, or yellow, instead of white and creamy, it needs to be discarded
  • An unpleasant odor: fresh tofu has little scent before it’s cooked, so be wary of any tofu that smells strong
  • Any flecks of mold: sometimes you will be able to see visible flecks of blue or green mold appearing on the surface of the tofu, and this is a sure sign that the tofu is off
  • Any change in taste: if you are worried about a block of tofu, cut a small piece off and taste it. It shouldn’t taste sour or unpleasant; if it does, spit it out

Can You Cut The Top Off Slimy Tofu?

Some people simply remove the top of tofu that has gone slimy, and use the flesh underneath if this is still firm and smells okay. However, this isn’t generally advisable. There is likely to be bacteria in the layer beneath the surface, even if it hasn’t started affecting the tofu’s consistency yet.

You should not just cut off the bad bit of tofu and use the rest, therefore. Doing so carries a risk of food poisoning, which can be serious enough to send you to the hospital in some cases. If you have taken tofu out of your fridge and found that it’s turned slimy, you should compost the whole piece. Do not try to salvage bits of it.

Does Tofu Water Make It Slimy?

Tofu is an unusual food in that it is stored in water. When you open the packet, you’ll find it is very wet inside, and you should transfer this water with the tofu if you put it in a different container. However, tofu water should not leave the tofu slimy.

The water serves to keep the tofu from drying out, making sure it stays in a block and doesn’t turn brittle and crumbly. If it isn’t stored in water, tofu tends to dry out and become unpleasant.

Some people choose to keep tofu in the same water it was packaged in, while others prefer to refresh the water – but either way, the water will not make your tofu slimy.

Do not drain your tofu and leave it in the fridge in an attempt to get rid of a slimy texture. This might cause the tofu to dry out a bit, but it won’t make it safer to consume.

Conclusion

Slimy tofu is not safe to eat, no. Tofu should have a firm, slightly damp texture, but it should not feel wet and sticky. If you find your tofu has a slimy surface to it, you need to throw it away; this is caused by bacteria, and it could make you sick if you try to eat it.
