Mind Lab Pro Review: Is This Plant-Based Nootropic Effective?

Whether you’re a college student who wants to ace your exams, an entrepreneur that wants to be highly productive, or an older adult concerned about dementia, the idea that you can pop a pill that enhances your cognition is highly appealing, which is why the popularity of nootropics is undeniable. 

Mind Lab Pro is one such nootropic, and it happens to be one of the most popular options on the market as it’s not exactly new, or in other words, it has been around long enough for people to know its worth. This being said, nootropics are a very controversial subject, even more so if we’re talking about their use among perfectly healthy individuals. 

In this article, we’ll go over the potential benefits of each ingredient in Mind Lab Pro to determine whether or not it actually works to boost your focus, memory, and clarity. 

Mind Lab Pro Ingredients & Benefits

To fully understand whether or not Mind Lab Pro is actually effective, we have to closely analyze the ingredients by looking at the existing scientific literature.

Organic Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Lion’s Mane, known as Yamabushitake, is a mushroom that grows on old or dead broadleaf trees and is consumed in Japan and China without reported harmful effects. 1

Based on a study done in mice, Lion’s Mane appears to have protected the mice against cognitive decline caused by β-amyloid pigmentation. 2 However, this is not exactly sound evidence as the study was done on an animal.

That being said, one human study that used 3g of 98% lion’s mane powder (in capsule form) showed improvements on a rating scale of dementia in those suffering from general cognitive decline. 3 In the same study, supplementation increased cognition relative to control, which improved over time but ultimately declined back to normal 4 weeks after cessation. 

Another cognitive effect noted with Lion’s Mane was the reduction of anxiety and depression in subjects fed 2g of lion’s mane, via cookies, over the course of 4 weeks. 4

With that being said, these studies have a small sample size, so it would be necessary to run a study with a larger number of subjects to determine whether these effects are actually legit. Otherwise, the effects are not statistically relevant. 

Citicoline

CDP-choline, or citicoline, is a nootropic compound that is used in preventing or treating memory impairments associated with aging due to the fact that both of the molecules it confers (choline and uridine) are neuroprotective and potentially enhance learning.

In elderly humans without dementia, supplementation of 500-1,000mg citicoline is associated with improvements in memory recall and verbal memory (1,000mg effective only in those with poor scores at baseline, 2,000mg effective in all subjects) but not object recognition. 5

One study conducted in a rat model of cerebrovascular dementia shows that taking 1000mg/kg of citicoline has neuroprotective effects, as assessed by the rat’s improved performance in a maze test and less hippocampal cell death. 6

A lot of this evidence is quite limited, and the positive effects seem to occur in the most elevated doses. Unfortunately, Pre Lab Pro only contains 250mg of citicoline per serving, which is quite low compared to the doses used in the aforementioned studies. 

N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine

L-tyrosine is an amino acid used as a precursor for the production of catecholamines such as dopamine (DA) and norepinephrine (NE), which tend to get depleted under stressful conditions. 

Many studies show that L-tyrosine help to prevent declined cognitive function under stressful, cognitively demanding conditions. 7 Despite not having been shown to improve memory under resting conditions, it has been shown to reduce memory decline under stressful conditions. 8

With that being said, it’s true that while L-tyrosine does show beneficial results in some studies, these results have not been consistent in other studies, where researchers have failed to observe positive effects on cognition. 

In general, 500-2000mg of L-tyrosine are taken before acute stressors come into play (usually exercise), but keep in mind that Mind Lab Pro contains lower doses of L-tyrosine, so it may not be as effective.  

Bacopa Monnieri 

Bacopa Monnieri, also known as water hyssop, is an herb often used in Ayurveda, and according to some preliminary research, it may be able to reduce cortisol secretion and the depletion of dopamine and serotonin during chronic stress, however, more research is required to fully prove its effects. 

It also seems to be an ingredient that is sensitive to age, in other words, it may work better in older individuals experiencing cognitive decline. 

Phosphatidylserine (Derived From Soy-Lecithin)

Phosphatidylserine is a compound similar to dietary fat that is found in high amounts in the brain, where it plays a role in cognitive function. Although it’s still a result of preliminary research, Phosphatidylserine may improve memory in the elderly and lower cortisol. 

One study found that this compound may promote attention and reduce symptoms of ADHD in children. 9 Other studies on young adults found that giving 400mg of Phosphatidylserine for 2 weeks resulted in an improvement in processing speed and accuracy pre-exercise. 10

This compound also appears to exert anti-stress effects in healthy individuals without stress disorders, but only followed prolonged supplementation, although researchers still don’t know exactly how it is doing so. 11

Other studies have also noted that Phosphatidylserine may reduce cognitive decline. One study conducted in rats during the aging process reveals that prolonged supplementation of phosphatidylserine can reduce the rate of cognitive decline or may even reverse it, albeit in a dose-dependent way. 12

However, it’s worth mentioning that in studies where you can note an effect of diminished age-related cognitive decline, the large body of evidence supports the role of bovine cortex phosphatidylserine, and not that of soy lecithin-based phosphatidylserine, which is what Mind Lab Pro contains. 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18

The long-term supplementation of phosphatidylserine also appears to exert effects in preventing dementia through the enhancement of cognition in healthy elderly adults, in other words, improving their memory and cognition in everyday situations, although more evidence is required to fully determine this. 19, 20

L-Theanine

L-theanine is a naturally occurring amino acid that is found in tea, among other natural sources.

Studies have been showing that l-theanine is associated with promoting a relaxed state without causing drowsiness and has also shown to have mild cognitive-enhancing effects. 21 

Additionally, it seems to suppress the blood pressure increasing effects of caffeine, hence why you’ll see it in pre-workout formulas that contain caffeine. 22 

And although it doesn’t have sedative-like effects (unlike sleeping pills), it does improve sleep quality by leaving you in a more relaxed state. 23

Maritime Pine Bark Extract

Maritime pine bark extract, or pycnogenol (which is the patented formulation of the maritime pine bark extract), is essentially an herb that contains polyphenols like procyanidins, catechins, and phenolic acids. 

This ingredient is mostly studied for its general health and anti-diabetic properties, and recent studies also have shown that its supplementation may help with chronic inflammation and autoimmune disease. 

However, it’s possible to find studies where maritime pine bark extract is used to improve cognition. For example, in a study with healthy students, taking maritime pine bark extract for a period of 8 weeks was associated with a reduced rate of test failures and increased, memory, executive functions, and mood. 24

A different study on health professionals between the age of 35 and 55 showed that supplementing maritime pine bark extract for 12 weeks straight led to improved cognitive function and reduced oxidative stress. 25

With this being said, you have to bear in mind that these studies were funded by the company that owns the patented formulation of the maritime pine, which is not usually a good sign as the studies may be biased. 

Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola Rosea is an herb with adaptogen properties that theoretically provide you with a general resistance to stress, but its mechanisms are not fully understood. 

With that being said, Rhodiola Rosea has an extensive track record for efficacy as it’s been used throughout the centuries to promote healing, stress relief, and an improved sense of wellbeing. 26

Although its anti-stress effects have been noted only with higher doses, it seems that Rhodiola Rosea can effectively act as a daily preventative against fatigue with doses as low as 50mg. 27, 28, 29, 30

Chronically fatigued individuals have also noted an attenuating effect with doses as high as 576mg taken during 28 days. 31

It’s certainly a promising ingredient with an impressive track record, and given that Mind Lab Pro contains 50mg of Rhodiola Rosea, it may possibly exert anti-fatigue effects. 

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 seems to be important for the production of a necessary coenzyme in the body, but other than that, it doesn’t seem to benefit the body in any other way that is relevant for this supplement. 

Vitamin B9

Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, plays an important role in the prevention of neural tube defects in children, so it’s usually regarded as an important vitamin for pregnant women.

Its role in this supplement is not as relevant as the other ingredients, but it’s believed that vitamin B9 is important in supporting general health. 

Vitamin B12

As vegans, vitamin B12 is one vitamin that we need to be sure we’re definitely consuming, and this is because vitamin B12 deficiency can predispose individuals to cognitive and neuronal damage, as well as a form of anemia known as macrocytic which is unique to B12 deficiency.

Also, bear in mind, that as we age, our ability to efficiently absorb vitamin B12 decreases, so it may be a good idea to supplement it, regardless of your diet. 

Mind Lab Pro Price

Like every other nootropic supplement, Mind Lab Pro is not particularly affordable, as it mixes a variety of unique and oftentimes rare ingredients, not to mention some of these ingredients are patented, meaning they’re more expensive.

Is Mind Lab Pro Effective?

Frankly, after reading some of the scientific literature regarding the ingredients in Mind Lab Pro, it is possible that you may experience some cognitive benefits when taking this supplement for a prolonged period of time, however, that does not mean that all ingredients are effective. 

Some of the more effective ingredients include l-tyrosine, phosphatidylserine, l-theanine, and Rhodiola Rosea. Unfortunately, some of the other ingredients either show mixed results or are only included in less than sufficient doses to actually exert any effect. 

Based on the reviews online about Mind Lab Pro, a great number of people have experienced some results such as reduced fatigue and mental sharpness, but we would still advise you to take these with a pinch of salt, as we don’t know if the validity of these results is entirely due to taking Mind Lab Pro, or if there’s a placebo effect at play that may lead people to experience the advertised benefits. 

The truth is that nootropics are highly controversial within the scientific community, and there’s a great deal of experts with mixed feelings about them, so it’s difficult to validate their use. However, you could try Mind Lab Pro (like many others) and see whether or not it works for you.
