There are many non-vegan fat burners out there, but the reason they’re not vegan is not exactly related to the actual ingredients that provide the fat-burning benefits.
What actually makes most fat burners non-vegan are the capsules being used.
Today, you can find two types of empty capsules: the conventional gelatin caps, and their vegetarian counterparts. The gelatin-based capsules are formed by using collagen, a protein obtained from connective tissues, as well as certain organs of animals.
Veggie capsules are formed by vegetable cellulose. Generally, the cellulose of choice is Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, which is extracted from the bark of pine and spruce trees.
If you’re interested in fat burners (w/ vegetable caps) that are credible, reputable, and effective, feel free to read the rest of this blog post.
Here Are 5 Things To Consider Before Buying a Vegan Fat Burner Supplement.
What ingredients are on the label? Are these ingredients known to provide benefits that aid with weight loss? Do these ingredients come from a plant-based source? Or are they just experimental ingredients with no documented fat-loss benefits?
Before buying a fat burner, you need to look past the claims, and actually take a good glance at the ingredients to really know what you’re buying.
Is the brand trustworthy?
Have you heard of the brand you’re buying from? Does it have a solid reputation in the supplement world? Are their supplements third-party tested?
In the list of products below, we’ve included supplements from companies that have a credible and trustworthy reputation, because we want to ensure that the supplements they’re advertising are as safe as they can possibly be.
The caffeine content is important for two reasons. On one hand, you may be very sensitive to stimulants, so you may not be okay with very high doses. However, if you’re used to drinking coffee, then perhaps a dosage that similar to a coffee cup may not actually work on you.
A regular cup of coffee usually has 95-200mg of caffeine, so you can compare the values on the label and see if it actually works for you.
Value for money
Regardless of your budget, it’s always useful to compare prices and look at the ingredients simultaneously. Most times, the value of the brand is reflected upon the price, so you have products that are actually very similar, but one is significantly more expensive than the other because the brand is highly recognizable.
The goal here is not to buy the cheapest fat burner but to actually choose the option that is the best bang for your buck without sacrificing the qualities of a good fat burner. We want to take into account the ingredients, servings, and price and figure out if it’s worth the investment.
Reputation among customers
Another thing I always make sure I do is to look carefully at reviews and determine if there is some type of information that I’ve missed, or just see if people are happy with the product and why.
In most cases, it’s really helpful to look at reviews and see how people feel about the product.
Generally, the more people back the product, the better.
The Best Vegan Fat Burners Reviewed
Transparent Labs – Vegan Fat Burner (Best Choice)
Transparent Labs is among our favorite supplement brands. The company is not only a highly regarded company in the US, but it’s also very transparent when it comes to ingredients, dosages, and scientific data on why certain ingredients were used.
Since the company doesn’t believe in proprietary blends, they provide individual ingredient dosages all the way down to the “other ingredients” section.
Here are some of the ingredients present in Transparent Labs Fat Burner, which are essentially the ones that are available in the most quantity.
There are several other ingredients present in Transparent Labs formula, including L-Theanine, Caffeine, Sallicine Bark Extract, Cayenne Pepper Extract, and Synephrine HC1.
In other words, this formula contains 9 scientifically backed ingredients, and zero fillers or harmful ingredients. If you wish to safely lose weight, this formula is a great option.
Burn Lab Pro – Vegan Fat Burner (Runner-Up)
This fat burner by Optinutra is yet another 100% plant-based option from a very reputable company. The difference is that this company is stationed in the UK.
Optinutra adheres to the clean and transparent phylosophy Transparent Labs follows, and on top of that, they’re equally known for selling premium-quality supplements with scientifically-backed ingredients that actually make a difference.
Here are some of the ingredients you can find inside Opti Nutra’s Fat Burner supplement:
Unlike many of the fat-burning supplements in this list, the Burn Lab Pro doesn’t contain caffeine which might not go down well with some people, but in hindsight, it doesn’t cause you to feel gym-jitters or heart palpitations.
Akin to the Fat Burner by Transparent Labs, this an equally solid choice.
Vintage Burn – Vegan Fat Burner
The Vintage Burn is among the most popular and best reviewed thermogenic fat burners for men.
There are no GMO or artificial ingredients, and the company (Old School Labs) is pretty transparent about which constituents and dose they used to create the formula.
The Vintage Burn formula consists of 9 fat-busting ingredients, with 100% of them being extracted from authentic plant-based sources.
Among the different ingredients, I’ve found several that contain scientifically-backed weight loss benefits, verified by actual credible sources.
This supplement is on the high-end in terms of price, but it actually comes with 120 veggie caps, and the suggested serving size per day is 2 capsules. That means this product may last you 60 days, so when compared to lower priced fat burners, it’s not really expensive.
If you want to burn fat, preserve muscle mass and improve your focus and mood, the Vintage Burn fat burner is a highly-reviewed product you can trust. In fact, if you take a quick glance at the reviews on Amazon, you will find shining reviews with actual real-life results.
Last but not least, the product is third-party tested, so you shouldn’t worry about any potential side effects unless you actually consume extreme dosages.
Nobi Nutrition – Vegan Fat Burner
Nobi Nutrition relies on a plant-based keto formula with raspberry ketones and green tea extract to surpress your apetite and bring down the amount of calories you digest daily.
On top of that, you also have caffeine anhydrous, a highly concentrated caffeine powder that effectively increases your performance during a workout.
Naturally, the better and more intense your performance is, the more fat you can burn.
Akin to the previous supplement, we have access to the ingredients and dosage.
The majority of supplements don’t show that, which reveals a certain amount of transparency from the company. This being said, the proprietary formula is 400mg, and that a combination of different ingredients, therefore we don’t know the exact dosage for each one.
Knowing the caffeine amounts would be helpful, especially if you’re someone that is sensitive to stimulants like caffeine.
Anyway, here are a few ingredients in this formula that stand out:
According to the Nobu Nutrition, the ingredients are of the highest quality, and the product is actually manufactured in the USA, and it’s actually third-party tested.
And akin to the previous supplement, the results and benefits mentioned by some of the reviewers are incredible, which suggests this is an actually great vegan fat burner supplement.
Burn XT Black – Vegan Fat Burner
The Burn XT is another fat burning supplement with 9 ingredients, with the great majority of them having a solid scientific background.
Unlike the previous supplements, this one contains trademarked ingredients (Capsimax and TeaCrine), a factor that speaks on the effectiveness of those ingredients.
In addition, the product comes with a 100% money back guarantee, so if you’re not happy with the product, you can easily send it back.
This product is on the high-end of the scale in terms of price, but it also comes with 90 capsules, which is the equivalent to 45 days of servings, and is slightly cheaper than Vintage Burn.
This is yet another product I’ve found that is quite transparent about the ingredients and the dosage of each, which as you’ve noticed, is a quality that I value a lot.
If you’re really desperate to lose fat, you’ll be happy to learn about the ingredients that have caught my attention in this fat-burning formula:
According to many of the reviewers, this product is extremely effective and it seems to not cause the jitters derived by the intake of high-doses of caffeine (which is common in most supplements).
Feel free to order it and test it out, because according to Jacked Factory, you have a 100% money-back guarantee.
The Genius Brand – Vegan Fat Burner
Genius Burn is a 2-in-1 fat-burning and cognitive-enhancing supplement.
Therefore, what you will find are ingredients that help you lose weight (cayenne pepper extract), and also ingredients that help you deal with stress by improving your mood.
I’m pretty sceptical about nootropic supplements and their actual effects, but the real-life reviews on this one are quite astounding.
But while the reviews seem incredible, the price of the supplement seems very high for the amount of capsules it contains (60). That’s 30 days worth of servings.
However, I do understand that the inclusion of ingredients such as ashwagandha, as well as several other trademarked ingredients, may result in a cost increase. Plus, the supplement is free from junk ingredients such as dyes, chemicals, fillers, and so on.
And of course, the company reveals a certain degree of transparency by actually showing the ingredients and dosages on the label.
Let’s start by looking at the ingredients that make this product effective:
Although this is a fat-burning supplement, the powerful nootropic ingredients can actually enhance key brain functions, which actually impact how you exercise and how motivated you feel about sticking to a restricted diet.
However, unlike other supplements, the Genius Burn does not have any caffeine. Instead, you Theacrine which is meant to help you maintain a steady energy level, without having to rely on stimulants like coffee that cause you to crash after the effect wears off.
If you want to know whether or not a fat burner works, you have to test it out for yourself. Despite the glowing reviews on Amazon, this type of supplement does not work for everyone.
What Are Fat Burners?
Fat burners are supplements formulated to provide you with a boost of energy that allows you to more easily lose weight as you exercise, and diet.
However, they cannot be regarded as a substitute for solid exercise and a restricted diet.
If you don’t have a solid exercise and diet plan in motion, there’s a chance you won’t see any results even if you rely on an excellent fat burner.
Fat burners are usually found in a pill or capsule form and are generally taken in intervals throughout the day, providing your body with an array of benefits that will help your body speed up the fat-burning process.
In that regard, fat burners do a couple of things:
The first step is to increase your metabolic rate, a factor that is detrimental in the burning of more calories during exercise and day to day activities.
Secondly, they increase your energy levels, ensuring you maintain the same level of intensity throughout your workouts, which results in the burning of more calories.
Then, what you will find in most are ingredients that control your appetite, which will help you refrain from eating more than you need to.
But remember, for all of this to be worthwhile, you need to do it in conjunction with a proper exercise plan and an actual diet. Otherwise, it just won’t work.
Why Use A Fat Burner?
Quite honestly, a lot of the marketing ploys used by most companies are completely overblown, leading most people to think that a fat burner is this miracle solution for fat loss.
However, while a fat burner has ingredients that provide you with an advantage, it is only a supplement to enhance your healthy lifestyle.
Anyway, what you will find is that different fat burners use different ingredients, but in general, they all want to provide enhancers for different weight loss mechanisms.
Boosting the Metabolism
Metabolism is essentially our body’s way of converting food into usable energy.
Not everyone has the same metabolism or metabolic rate, and that can be easily confirmed by measuring the difference in metabolic rate for males and females.
Body size, gender, and genes are elements that define the speed of your metabolism.
For example, muscle requires more energy to maintain than fat, so people with more muscle generally have a faster metabolism. As we grow old, we tend to gain fat and lose muscle, which explains why our metabolism gets slower over time.
But at the same time, there is not an abundance of evidence supporting the notion that people that are fat have a slow metabolism.
In fact, research points to the fact that overweight people have faster metabolisms than thinner people because their body requires more energy to support basic bodily functions.
You can attempt to accelerate your metabolic rate, but you won’t shred the fat off your body if you don’t commit to diet and exercise.
Some ingredients in fat burners have been shown to increase metabolic rate, but looking at the whole picture, it’s hard to know how much of a difference those ingredients are actually making.
As I’ve mentioned previously, thermogenesis is a process that helps the body convert calories into heat. In other words, a process that can increase your body’s ability to burn calories.
Fat burners have ingredients such as cayenne pepper and forskolin which induce thermogenesis, so they help counteract the decrease in the metabolic rate that takes place in response to low-calorie diets and weight loss.
This being said, more research is required to cement the impact of thermogenesis (+ derived ingredients) in a weight loss program.
Lipolysis is the catabolic process of breaking down fats and other lipids, which is important for the mobilization of stored fat issues.
When combined with exercise and a calorie-restricted diet, lipolysis may be a great contributor to weight loss and fat burning.
As such, multiple fat burners have ingredients that aim to affect lipolysis.
Boosting Energy Levels
In order to optimally lose weight, you have to go on a calorie-restricted diet, and you have to exercise. But in order to exercise while eating less food, you must have some energy to spend.
That’s why many fat burner brands incorporate ingredients that boost your energy levels, with most of them being stimulants like caffeine anhydrous, green coffee berry extract, green tea extract, and guarana.
An important part of losing weight is being able to avoid empty calories or foods that contain unusual amounts of sugars, fats or oils (i.e: bread, candies, sweet beverages).
Generally, these are foods we carelessly become addicted to, and these are also the foods that contribute to us getting overweight.
Therefore, some fat burners contain ingredients that suppress our appetite, so that the painful process of maintaining a clean, healthy diet — free from those unhealthy foods — is easier.
Dietary Fiber Also Plays a Role
A legitimate plant-based diet is typically rich in fiber. Yet it also happens that fat burners have a certain amount of dietary fiber in their constitution.
Dietary fiber is great for many reasons such as:
- Normalizing bowel movements and maintaining bowel health;
- Lowering cholesterol levels and controlling blood sugar levels;
- But, more importantly, it allows you to feel satisfied for a longer period of time, which leads you to eat fewer calories and thus losing weight.
That is part of the reason why a whole-foods plant-based diet is recommended for weight loss.
Indeed, a fat burner has ingredients that address multiple facets of weight loss, which increase your chances of actually burning fat and/or losing weight — but for it to actually work, you have to be very disciplined about your eating habits and the frequency of your workouts.
This is merely a supplement, not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle.
Most Common Ingredients In Vegan Fat Burners
Green Tea Extract
Green tea has substances that can help you lose fat.
One of those substances is caffeine, and the other substances are catechins. In conjunction, the substances are shown to contribute to weight loss because they regulate the hormones that can enhance thermogenesis. (1, 2, 3)
Now, as you know, thermogenesis is a process by which your body burns calories to produce heat upon digestion. Green tea, according to research, has shown to accelerate this process by improving the effectiveness at which your body burns calories. (4)
For example, in a 12-week study with 115 overweight women, researchers had the women take 856 mg of green tea extract daily— an amount that led to a 2.4-lb weight loss.
Synephrine is a biogenic amine that can be found in the peels of citrus plants.
There is still confusion and controversy over whether synephrine is safe and what actual effects the substance has on the body.
When it comes to weight loss, there are a few potential benefits, but the studies covering those benefits are too small or contradicted by other studies.
For instance, a study of 10 subjects given 50 mg of p-synephrine revealed that subjects burned 65 calories more than participants given placebo in the first 75 minutes after taking the supplement.
You also have other similar studies that point to fat burning and performance-enhancing effects among subjects, but the studies are either too small, or there isn’t significant evidence to properly back up the claims made by supplement companies that tend to go overboard.
Raspberry ketones are another ingredient often included in fat burning supplements.
It is claimed that they cause the fat within cells to break down effectively, allowing the body to burn fat at a faster rate. In addition, they are also claimed to increase levels of adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism.
However, of all weight loss ingredients, it is the least promising because there are no actual tests done in humans. Most tests only show promising results on mice or rats.
The interest in raspberry ketones arises from the fact it has a molecular structure that is very similar to two other molecules — synephrine and capsaicin (a substance found in chili peppers).
Forskohlii is a plant-based ingredient derived from the root of a member of the mint family as the Indian coleus. A plant that grows in Thailand, Nepal, and certain parts of India.
In theory, Forskohlii has been used for weight loss because it helps create enzymes that free fatty acids from the body’s cells.
Once they’re free, they can be burned as fuel without affecting lean body mass.
However, this only works if you’re in a calorie deficit, so you must be burning more calories than you consume through food and drinks. So while Forskohlii may raise fat-burning capabilities, it won’t happen unless you’re committed to exercise and diet.
In terms of research, the results of this ingredient are mixed. One study conducted on a small sample of overweight and obese men showed that Forskohlii reduced their body fat, but it had little effect on their weight. Apparently, it also increased their testosterone, which is a factor linked to lower weight and sustained weight loss.
In a different study, 23 overweight females were given 250mg of Forskohlii twice a day for two weeks, which failed to help the women to lose weight. Yet, it also lessened any additional weight gain while they were taking it.
This just shows that on its own, the ingredient cannot create miracles and although there is a chance it may help you lose weight, you need to diet and exercise.
“Capsaicinoids” is the name given to a class of compounds found in members of the capsicum family, also known as peppers.
The most common member is capsaicin which is the chemical compound that gives hot chili peppers their notable heat and is present in almost all peppers, but it varies in intensity.
Again, there are claims that capsaicin can help speed up metabolism and reduce fat tissue, as well as control your appetite, preventing you from eating the wrong foods (or too much). (5)
However, this cannot be confirmed for sure. But there are some studies that this compound may be of some benefit to weight loss. For example, according to a report published in Appetite, evidence was found that the consumption of a minimum of 2mg of capsaicinoids before a meal reduced energy intake by 74 calories during the meal.
However, different scientific sources suggest that it’s still too soon to recommend capsaicin as a supplement. The evidence doesn’t show an overwhelming consensus.
Can Anyone Benefit From a Fat Burner?
Generally, anyone can rely on fat burners, but according to supplement companies, the groups of people who can benefit the most are the following:
- Men of any age: Anyone over 18 who wants to shed off fat and a few pounds can take a fat burner. Since this is theoretically a supplement that can aid you with weight loss, you can use it in conjunction with a good diet and exercise in order to lose significant weight or just burn off the belly fat you accumulated during a holiday.
- Weightlifters: Weightlifters, bodybuilding and fitness enthusiasts are probably the people who can rely on fat burners the most, given how their bodies must be conditioned to look a certain way once the competitive season comes around (especially bodybuilders).
- People on “cutting” cycles: If you’re disciplined enough to follow a traditional bulk/cut cycle, then fat burners can provide you with an edge during cut cycles. The energy-boosting and appetite suppressing capabilities (and more), can make it easier to sustain intense workouts while being on a calorie-deficient diet to lose weight.
- Aging men: As the body ages, so does our metabolism slow down and the testosterone in our body begins dropping. While I do believe exercise and diet are the most important aspects of losing weight, at a certain age it is bound to become more difficult. So fat burners may perhaps give you an edge that is hard to sustain when your metabolism and testosterone are low.
How Should You Use A Fat Burner?
Like any other supplement, you should pay close attention to the information on the product packaging. Most fat burners are pills or capsules, and usually require 2-3 doses a day.
But remember, these supplements should only be used to help you achieve your goal of losing weight, and it should not go beyond that and become a long-term addiction. They’re typically meant for short 1-3 month cycles, which are the months where you may make the most out of it, because beyond that, your body may grow accustomed to it.
Most people suggest taking this supplement in the morning in order to feel empowered as you start the day… but I’d say that 30 minutes – 1 hour before a workout can work really well.
Fat burners have a high caffeine content, which can pump your energy levels and improve your performance during a workout, which will enable you to burn more calories in the process.
Can I Use Fat Burners With Other Supplements?
As far as I’m aware, there is no problem with taking other supplements in conjunction with a fat burner. In fact, you’re probably already taking a protein powder, pre-workout and so on.
There’s always a risk that a certain ingredient in a supplement may not respond well to an ingredient from a different supplement — which is why I’d recommend you speak to a health expert before you start taking different supplements.
Don’t take two different fat burners, or exceed the recommended dosage. A fat burner may naturally cause some side effects, but by not respecting the dosage, the negative side effects may be far from mild.
Caffeine, for instance, can be quite dangerous if consumed in excess. That is present in weight loss supplements, pre-workouts, and so on. So respect the dosage and you’ll probably be fine.
Do Fat Burners Have Any Side Effects?
Every supplement has the potential to cause side effects.
Fat burners are a type of supplement where the research isn’t all positively one-sided. As a result, you don’t know exactly what to expect in a fat burner, other than what is marketed by the brand, or by knowing the ingredients included in the recipe.
Some use natural ingredients (which is the safest way to go), while others attempt to experiment by changing the ingredients to achieve a particular result. Since every product uses different ingredients, side effects may vary, so keep that in mind.
Here are some of the most common side effects in fat burners:
Since most fat burners contain stimulants like caffeine that keep your brain awake and aware, there is a possibility it may cause difficulty falling asleep at night.
Thus, if you want to avoid that happening to you, you need to treat them like regular caffeinated drinks and avoid them in the late afternoon or evening if you want to sleep soundly.
Another side-effect of fat burners is dehydration. When you induce thermogenesis, there is an increase in body temperature, so your body uses more water than usual to cool down.
This also means you need to drink significantly more water in order to stay hydrated.
Other than these two side-effects, there should be nothing to worry about. However, remember not to abuse the number of dosages, otherwise, it can result in more severe side effects.
Also, be sure to talk to a doctor before you decide to take any supplements out there.
Losing weight can be a difficult thing to do. When you cut down the calories, that means your body is receiving less energy, so working out may become more arduous.
That’s why pre-workout or fat-burning supplements can provide you with an edge when it comes to sustain and maintain the discipline in a challenging weight-loss adventure. Before you buy any supplement, you have to nail down your diet and commitment to exercise, otherwise, the supplement won’t work at all.
Fat burners have a bad reputation because a lot of the claims are blown out of proportion, but the ingredients in these supplements do have evidence in favor of weight loss benefits.
However, it’s not a miracle solution, and should only be used to maximize your diet and exercise.
