The 8 Best Vegan Fat Burners in 2022 (The Ultimate Guide)

There are many non-vegan fat burners out there, but the reason they’re not vegan is not exactly related to the actual ingredients that provide the fat-burning benefits.

What actually makes most fat burners non-vegan are the capsules they contain.

Today, you can find two types of empty capsules: the conventional gelatin caps, and their vegetarian counterparts. The gelatin-based capsules are formed using collagen, a protein obtained from connective tissues, as well as certain organs of animals.

Veggie capsules are formed by vegetable cellulose. Generally, the cellulose of choice is Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, which is extracted from the bark of pine and spruce trees.

If you’re interested in fat burners (w/ vegetable caps) that are credible, reputable, and effective, we found seven different vegan fat burners that fit the criteria:

Here Are 5 Things To Consider Before Buying a Vegan Fat Burner Supplement.

What ingredients are on the label? Are these ingredients known to provide benefits that aid with weight loss? Do these ingredients come from a plant-based source? Or are they just experimental ingredients with no documented fat-loss benefits?

Before buying a fat burner, you need to look past the claims, and actually take a good glance at the ingredients to really know what you’re buying.

Is the brand trustworthy?

Have you heard of the brand you’re buying from? Does it have a solid reputation in the supplement world? Are their supplements third-party tested?

In the list of products below, we’ve included supplements from companies that have a credible reputation, because we want to ensure that the supplements they’re advertising are as safe as possible.

Caffeine content

The caffeine content is important for two reasons. On one hand, you may be very sensitive to stimulants, so you may not be okay with very high doses. However, if you’re used to drinking coffee, then perhaps a dosage that similar to a coffee cup may not actually work on you.

A regular cup of coffee usually has  95-200mg of caffeine, so you can compare the values on the label and see if it actually works for you.

Value for money

Regardless of your budget, it’s always useful to compare prices and look at the ingredients simultaneously. Most times, the value of the brand is reflected upon the price, so you have products that are actually very similar, but one is significantly more expensive than the other because the brand is highly recognizable.

The goal here is not to buy the cheapest fat burner but to actually choose the option that is the best bang for your buck without sacrificing the qualities of a good fat burner. We want to take into account the ingredients, servings, and price and figure out if it’s worth the investment.

Reputation among customers

Another thing I always make sure I do is to look carefully at reviews and determine if there is some type of information that I’ve missed, or just see if people are happy with the product and why.

In most cases, it’s really helpful to look at reviews and see how people feel about the product.

Generally, the more people back the product, the better.

The 8 Best Vegan Fat Burners Reviewed

Transparent Labs – Vegan Fat Burner (Editor’s Choice)

Transparent Labs is among our favorite supplement brands. The company is not only a highly regarded company in the US, but it’s also very transparent when it comes to ingredients, dosages, and scientific data on why certain ingredients were used.

Since the company doesn’t believe in proprietary blends, they provide individual ingredient dosages all the way down to the “other ingredients” section.

  • Clinically tested ingredients;
  • Increases metabolic rate;
  • 100% transparent formula;
  • Non-GMO and Gluten-Free, as well as no artificial ingredients;
  • Not the cheapest supplement.

Here are some of the ingredients present in Transparent Labs Fat Burner, which are essentially the ones that are available in the most quantity.

Forslean – This is a high-quality extract from Forskolin, a natural ingredient that stimulates the release of fatty acids from the adipose tissue. A study published by Obesity Research & Clinical Practice found Forslean forskolin supplementation to both decrease fat and increase lean muscle mass in obese men in comparison to placebo.

Green Tea – There are many benefits to Green Tea, mainly because it contains certain components that aid the body with weight loss. One of them is Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). A review in the Journal of Nutrition shows that Green Tea and EGCG work to decrease fat synthesis, increase fat breakdown, and increase glucose utilization.

5-HTP – This is a component sourced from Griffonia Simplicifolia, and it has been found to effectively reduce appetite in overweight dieting individuals.

L-Tyrosine – Also referred to as the active form of Tyrosine, L-Tyrosine is a potent anti-stress amino acid that plays several roles in the body. But its benefits to weight loss are through the reduction of fatigue during strenuous workouts.

There are several other ingredients present in the Transparent Labs formula, including L-Theanine, Caffeine, Sallicine Bark Extract, Cayenne Pepper Extract, and Synephrine HC1.

In other words, this formula contains some scientifically backed ingredients, and zero fillers or harmful ingredients; so if you wish to safely lose weight, I don’t think you can go wrong with this fat burner.

Instant Knockout- Vegan Fat Burner (Runner-Up)

Instant Knockout is a relatively new brand, however, it’s one that has gotten popular very quickly among elite athletes and coaches in MMA circles.

MMA fighters lose more weight than other combat athletes; in fact, the average UFC fighter loses an average of 15-20 pounds in the five days leading up to the weigh-in; and some of these elite individuals actually recommend Instant Knockout.

  • Premium supplement with clinically tested ingredients;
  • Increases metabolic rate and decreases appetite;
  • Backed by elite MMA athletes & lots of testimonials.
  • Expensive price point;
  • 4 capsules per serving is not convenient.

Here are some of the ingredients in this formula:

Green Tea Extract – Green tea has been shown in studies to help you tap into stored fat by increasing your metabolic rate and calorie burn through a process called thermogenesis.

Caffeine –One of the most used stimulants in bodybuilding supplements, caffeine has been shown in studies to help with aerobic exercise, power output, running capacity, and other activities, proving that it is a highly versatile ingredient with numerous benefits. It has been included in this formula to provide you with energy while also assisting you in weight management due to its ability to promote thermogenesis.

Cayenne Pepper Seeds – Cayenne pepper seeds contain Capsaicin, and like green tea, it is a powerful thermogenic. It boosts your metabolism and turns on the fat-burning switch in your body.

Glucomannan – This is a dietary fiber that helps you feel fuller for longer, which reduces your appetite and food cravings. It aids weight loss by helping you avoid the triggers of overeating and excessive snacking.

L-Theanine – Along with caffeine and catechins, L-theanine is one of the most active ingredients in green tea. It relieves stress and promotes relaxation without making you sleepy. It may have a mild antagonistic effect on caffeine by removing “jitters” but more research is needed to confirm this.

Vitamin B6 – Some studies reveal that B6 might have an effect on both dopamine and serotonin levels, keeping you focused, motivated, and more willing to train. However, the evidence is limited, and the use of this particular ingredient is questionable.

Vitamin D3 – Vitamin D has been linked to a variety of benefits, including improved immune health, bone health, and overall well-being. Supplementation may also lower the risk of cancer mortality, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.

Vitamin B12 – While it doesn’t seem to have a significant effect on weight/fat loss, it’s still an important vitamin to regularly consume, particularly if you’re vegan.

Black Pepper Extract – Black pepper contains piperine, a molecule that does not do much on its own but can inhibit enzymes that attack other molecules. As a result, it is combined with other supplements to boost absorption rates, however, its effects seem to be more significant with glucuronidated supplements such as curcumin.

Instant Knockout seems to be a legit brand, however, like most bodybuilding supplements, some of the ingredients do require more research before their effects can be confirmed.

According to reviews and testimonials, the supplement appears to have a thermogenic and appetite suppressant effect, but it’s unclear whether this is due to the entire formulation or simply the work of a few ingredients.

PhenGold – Vegan Fat Burner

PhenGold increases your metabolism and suppresses your hunger, and those effects combined increase your body’s natural ability to burn fat. This is essentially what a fat-burning supplement is meant to do.

The supplement itself is transparent, clean, and contains the exact formula of ingredients capable of speeding up the fat-burning process in your body as you begin your exercise.

Needless to say – it is vegan-friendly, it has no artificial ingredients, fillers or dyes, and is GMO-free.

  • Clinically tested ingredients;
  • Non-proprietary blend;
  • No artificial ingredients, fillers or dyes;
  • GMO-free.
  • Not the cheapest supplement.
  • PhenGold contains several clinically-researched ingredients, such as the following:

    Green Tea – This is a herb with many benefits. It contains components that aid with fat loss, namely Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG). The Journal of Nutrition points out that EGCG helps decrease fat synthesis, increase fat breakdown, and increase glucose use. The faster you clear out your glucose storages, the faster you’re able to reach the fat.

    Rhodiola Rosea – Studies show that Rhodiola Rosea is capable of breaking down fatty tissue when combined with exercise. It is also capable of reducing both mental and physical fatigue, which also helps your performance output, thus increases the number of calories you’re able to burn throughout a workout.

    L-Theanine & Green Coffee –  When you combine L-Theanine with Green Coffee, you’re able to improve fat loss by regulating glucose, lipids, and protein metabolism. These are two ingredients with anti-obesity effects, but it’s obviously not a miracle formula, like everything else.

    PhenGold also contains other ingredients like L-Tyrosine, Green Coffee, Cayenne Pepper, and B-complex vitamins, including vitamin B12, which contribute to optimal fat loss.

    It’s a pretty good supplement because it contains many effective ingredients, but the price is quite steep.

    Burn Lab Pro – Vegan Fat Burner

    This fat burner by Optinutra is yet another 100% plant-based option from a very reputable company. The difference is that this company is stationed in the UK.

    Optinutra adheres to the clean and transparent phylosophy Transparent Labs follows, and on top of that, they’re equally known for selling premium-quality supplements with scientifically-backed ingredients that actually make a difference.

    • Premium quality supplement from a reputable company;
    • Prebiotic Nutricaps enhance absorption;
    • Free from dirty fillers and banned substances;
    • Backed by research and also contains unique stacks.
    • Some people don’t appreaciate the lack of caffeine.

    Here are some of the ingredients you can find inside Opti Nutra’s Fat Burner supplement:

    ForsLean® Coleus Forskohlii – This is essentially the only natural source of Forskolin, which is a component that activates an enzyme in our body that increases cAMP, a compound that promotes lean body mass by optimizing hormonal cell messengers that regulate metabolism, thermogenesis, and anabolic muscle growth. On top of that, it also activates the enzyme protein kinase, which basically stimulates the breakdown of tryglycerides.

    HMB (ß-Hydroxy ß-Methylbutyrate) – Sometimes present in creatine, HMB is a nutrient that maximizes fat loss by promoting muscle growth through the activation of protein synthesis. It also enhances strength, optimizes oxygen consumption, and acid buffering to increase resistance during strenuous exercise.

    Capsimax® Cayenne Pepper Extract – Capsaicinoids stimulate the adrenals to release epinephrine and norepinephrine — hormones that have been shown to maximize calories burning during exercise and promote fat breakdown, mobilization, and fat oxidation.

    Black Pepper Extract – Piperine, an active ingredient within Black Pepper, is known to help with weight management by optimizing thermogenesis to increase the amount of energy you spend and inhibiting the formation of new fat cells.

    Unlike many of the fat-burning supplements in this list, the Burn Lab Pro doesn’t contain caffeine which might not go down well with some people, but in hindsight, it doesn’t cause you to feel gym-jitters or heart palpitations.

    Akin to the Fat Burner by Transparent Labs, this an equally solid choice.

    Vintage Burn – Vegan Fat Burner

    The Vintage Burn is among the most popular and best-reviewed thermogenic fat burners for men.

    There are no GMO or artificial ingredients, and the company (Old School Labs) is pretty transparent about which constituents and dose they used to create the formula.

    The Vintage Burn formula consists of 9 fat-busting ingredients, with 100% of them being extracted from authentic plant-based sources.

    • Can help you burn fat more effectively;
    • The caffeine content can provide you with the optimal energy levels for a good workout;
    • Gives you more energy and the ability to control your appetite;
    • No GMO or artificial ingredients included;
    • Company is actually transparent about ingredients and dosages;
    • A bit more pricey than most supplements;
    • Some ingredients require more scientific evidence.

    Among the different ingredients, I’ve found several that contain scientifically-backed weight loss benefits, verified by actual credible sources.

    Forskohlii Root Extract – Helps release fatty acids from fat deposits, and positive clinical studies that praise Forskohlii’s ability to increase metabolism and burn body fat actually exist. (study)

    Green Tea Leaf Extract – This ingredient contains catechins and a decent amount of caffeine, which is a combination of elements that is actually responsible for plenty of weight loss benefits. Both have shown to help with weight loss by regulating the hormones that can enhance thermogenesis. (see studies 1, 2, 3)

    Olive Leaf Extract – Olive tree leaves contain oleuropein, a polyphenol that may actually help people lose weight. According to Medical News Today, a few studies have noted reduced body weight and an improved metabolic profile for the actual subjects. (see studies 1, 2)

    Caffeine – This one is the most obvious, and you will find that most fat burners have it. Caffeine allows you to go above and beyond when it comes to burning calories during a workout, which is among the most important factors in weight loss.

    This supplement is on the high-end in terms of price, but it actually comes with 120 veggie caps, and the suggested serving size per day is 2 capsules. That means this product may last you 60 days, so when compared to lower priced fat burners, it’s not really expensive.

    If you want to burn fat, preserve muscle mass and improve your focus and mood, the Vintage Burn fat burner is a highly-reviewed product you can trust. In fact, if you take a quick glance at the reviews on Amazon, you will find shining reviews with actual real-life results.

    Last but not least, the product is third-party tested, so you shouldn’t worry about any potential side effects unless you actually consume extreme dosages.

    Nobi Nutrition – Vegan Fat Burner

    Nobi Nutrition relies on a plant-based keto formula with raspberry ketones and green tea extract to surpress your apetite and bring down the amount of calories you digest daily.

    On top of that, you also have caffeine anhydrous, a highly concentrated caffeine powder that effectively increases your performance during a workout.

    Naturally, the better and more intense your performance is, the more fat you can burn.

    • Contains actual ingredients that can affect weight loss (i.e: Green tea extract, kelp powder, apple cider, etc)
    • It can supress your appetite and reduce your calorie consumption;
    • Formulated in the USA and a GMP certified facility;
    • For being premium it’s quite affordable;
    • The ingredient (Raspberry ketones) requires more research when it comes to actual weight loss benefits;

    Akin to the previous supplement, we have access to the ingredients and dosage.

    The majority of supplements don’t show that, which reveals a certain amount of transparency from the company. This being said, the proprietary formula is 400mg, and that a combination of different ingredients, therefore we don’t know the exact dosage for each one.

    Knowing the caffeine amounts would be helpful, especially if you’re someone that is sensitive to stimulants like caffeine.

    Anyway, here are a few ingredients in this formula that stand out:

    Kelp Powder – Kelp grows in oceans (in areas called kelp forests), and they exist in about 30 varieties. Some studies suggest that kelp has a really powerful effect on weight loss and obesity, with the natural fiber alginate in kelp being able to block the absorption of fat in the gut. However, it requires more research in order to be overwhelmingly accurate. (see studies 1, 2)

    Green Tea Extract – Again, this is present in most fat burners, and it’s known for regulating the hormones that enhance thermogenesis. In other words, it may indeed help you burn more calories during an exercise. Green tea extract also contains a certain amount of caffeine, so it’s also a stimulant that boosts your energy.

    Apple Cider – Not the most obvious ingredient, but apple cider can actually help you lose weight and reduce your body fat. Several human studies show that vinegar can increase satiety, which will force you to eat fewer calories and thus decrease your weight. In a few studies, people consuming vinegar with a high-carb meal ended up eating less 200-275 calories in the day. (see studies 1, 2)

    According to the Nobu Nutrition, the ingredients are of the highest quality, and the product is actually manufactured in the USA, and it’s actually third-party tested.

    And akin to the previous supplement, the results and benefits mentioned by some of the reviewers are incredible, which suggests this is an actually great vegan fat burner supplement.

    Burn XT – Vegan Fat Burner

    The Burn XT is another fat-burning supplement with 9 ingredients, with the great majority of them having a solid scientific background.

    Unlike the previous supplements, this one contains trademarked ingredients (Capsimax and TeaCrine), a factor that speaks on the effectiveness of those ingredients.

    In addition, the product comes with a 100% money back guarantee, so if you’re not happy with the product, you can easily send it back.

    • Several research-backed ingredients;
    • Uses effective trademarked ingredients like Capsimax;
    • No crashing or jitters due to Infinergy (dicaffeine malate)
    • Backed by a 100% money-back guarantee;
    • A bit pricey

    This product is on the high-end of the scale in terms of price, but it also comes with 90 capsules, which is the equivalent to 45 days of servings and is slightly cheaper than Vintage Burn.

    This is yet another product I’ve found that is quite transparent about the ingredients and the dosage of each, which as you’ve noticed, is a quality that I value a lot.

    If you’re really desperate to lose fat, you’ll be happy to learn about the ingredients that have caught my attention in this fat-burning formula:

    L-Carnitine – In theory, L-carnitine helps move fatty acids into the cells so that they can be burned for energy. There are mixed opinions about this ingredient, but some evidence suggests that L-carnitine may aid in weight loss for obese individuals and older people. (see study)

    Theacrine – According to WebMD, Theacrine affects the brain in a similar fashion to caffeine, so it is used to increase energy and reduce fatigue. However, unlike caffeine, it does not seem to affect blood pressure. Plus, more evidence is required to fully confirm their weight loss benefits.

    Capsimax – This ingredient is essentially cayenne pepper fruit extract. Cayenne pepper has several benefits, with the most notable being metabolism-boosting properties. It increases the amount of heat your body produces, which increases the number of calories you burn. (see studies 1, 2)

    However, keep in mind that these results are not astronomical.

    Lastly, Cayenne pepper also helps reduce hunger, a fact that can actually be proven by several studies. (see studies 1, 2, 3, 4)

    Infinergy – Also known as dicaffeine malate, Infinergy is an ionic bonded combination of caffeine and malic acid. Akin to caffeine, it provides you with the same energy-boosting effects, but unlike caffeine, dicaffeine malate calms the digestive distress caused by natural caffeine.

    According to many of the reviewers, this product is extremely effective and it seems to not cause the jitters derived from the intake of high doses of caffeine (which is common in most supplements).

    Feel free to order it and test it out. According to Jacked Factory, you have a 100% money-back guarantee.

    The Genius Brand – Vegan Fat Burner

    Genius Burn is a 2-in-1 fat-burning and cognitive-enhancing supplement.

    Therefore, what you will find are ingredients that help you lose weight (cayenne pepper extract), and also ingredients that help you deal with stress by improving your mood.

    I’m pretty sceptical about nootropic supplements and their actual effects, but the real-life reviews on this one are quite astounding.

    • Several scientifically-backed ingredients such as paradoxine, ashwagandha, capsimax, theacrine and more;
    • Reduces cortisol, making it easier to control your appetite and mood;
    • You’re energy levels don’t crash;
    • Free from weird fillers, dyes, chemicals, etc;
    • Trademarked, tested ingredients.
    • Quite expensive.

    But while the reviews seem incredible, the price of the supplement seems very high for the amount of capsules it contains (60). That’s 30 days worth of servings.

    However, I do understand that the inclusion of ingredients such as ashwagandha, as well as several other trademarked ingredients, may result in a cost increase. Plus, the supplement is free from junk ingredients such as dyes, chemicals, fillers, and so on.

    And of course, the company reveals a certain degree of transparency by actually showing the ingredients and dosages on the label.

    Let’s start by looking at the ingredients that make this product effective:

    Theacrine – This is a natural compound that is very similar to caffeine, and it’s extracted from the Capuacu fruit and the Kucha plant. One grows in the Amazon, and the other in China.

    A study of 15 healthy humans showed that a 200mg dose of Theacrine resulted in an increase in energy, focus, concentration, as well as willingness to exercise, motivation to train, and libido. However, despite the amazing effects, this Theacrine requires more research.

    Capsimax – Also known as cayenne pepper fruit extract, Capsimax is a capsaicin-rich ingredient that may actually lower body weight, boost metabolism, burn fat, and suppress appetite. If you follow a proper diet and exercise plan, Capsimax can also improve your athletic performance and overall physical endurance. (see studies 1, 2)

    KSM-66 Ashwagandha – Ashwagandha is an ancient medicinal herb, and it can provide you with different health benefits. For example, it can reduce cortisol levels. Cortisol is also referred to as the stress hormone, and when cortisol levels are too elevated, that can actually lead to the accumulation of fat in the abdomen. Fortunately, there are several studies that point to the fact Ashwagandha can reduce cortisol levels. (see studies 1, 2, 3)

    Ashwagandha may also boost testosterone levels, and increase your muscle mass and strength

    Although this is a fat-burning supplement, the powerful nootropic ingredients can actually enhance key brain functions, which actually impact how you exercise and how motivated you feel about sticking to a restricted diet.

    However, unlike other supplements, the Genius Burn does not have any caffeine. Instead, you Theacrine which is meant to help you maintain a steady energy level, without having to rely on stimulants like coffee that cause you to crash after the effect wears off.

    If you want to know whether or not a fat burner works, you have to test it out for yourself. Despite the glowing reviews on Amazon, this type of supplement does not work for everyone.

    What Are Fat Burners?

    fat burners

    Fat burners are supplements formulated to provide you with a boost of energy that allows you to more easily lose weight as you exercise, and diet.

    However, they cannot be regarded as a substitute for solid exercise and a restricted diet.

    If you don’t have a solid exercise and diet plan in motion, there’s a chance you won’t see any results even if you rely on an excellent fat burner.

    Fat burners are usually found in a pill or capsule form and are generally taken in intervals throughout the day, providing your body with an array of benefits that will help your body speed up the fat-burning process.

    In that regard, fat burners do a couple of things:

    The first step is to increase your metabolic rate, a factor that is detrimental to the burning of more calories during exercise and day-to-day activities.

    Secondly, they increase your energy levels, ensuring you maintain the same level of intensity throughout your workouts, which results in the burning of more calories.

    Then, what you will find in most are ingredients that control your appetite, which will help you refrain from eating more than you need to.

    But remember, for all of this to be worthwhile, you need to do it in conjunction with a proper exercise plan and an actual diet. Otherwise, it just won’t work.

    Why Use A Fat Burner?

    Quite honestly, a lot of the marketing ploys used by most companies are completely overblown, leading most people to think that a fat burner is this miracle solution for fat loss.

    However, while a fat burner has ingredients that provide you with an advantage, it is only a supplement to enhance your healthy lifestyle.

    Anyway, what you will find is that different fat burners use different ingredients, but in general, they all want to provide enhancers for different weight loss mechanisms.

    Boosting the Metabolism

    Metabolism is essentially our body’s way of converting food into usable energy.

    Not everyone has the same metabolism or metabolic rate, and that can be easily confirmed by measuring the difference in metabolic rate for males and females.

    Body size, gender, and genes are elements that define the speed of your metabolism.

    For example, muscle requires more energy to maintain than fat, so people with more muscle generally have a faster metabolism. As we grow old, we tend to gain fat and lose muscle, which explains why our metabolism gets slower over time.

    But at the same time, there is not an abundance of evidence supporting the notion that people that are fat have a slow metabolism.

    In fact, research points to the fact that overweight people have faster metabolisms than thinner people because their body requires more energy to support basic bodily functions.

    You can attempt to accelerate your metabolic rate, but you won’t shred the fat off your body if you don’t commit to diet and exercise.

    Some ingredients in fat burners have been shown to increase metabolic rate, but looking at the whole picture, it’s hard to know how much of a difference those ingredients are actually making.

    Thermogenesis Activation

    As I’ve mentioned previously, thermogenesis is a process that helps the body convert calories into heat. In other words, a process that can increase your body’s ability to burn calories.

    Fat burners have ingredients such as cayenne pepper and forskolin which induce thermogenesis, so they help counteract the decrease in the metabolic rate that takes place in response to low-calorie diets and weight loss.

    This being said, more research is required to cement the impact of thermogenesis (+ derived ingredients) in a weight loss program.

    Lipolysis is the catabolic process of breaking down fats and other lipids, which is important for the mobilization of stored fat issues.

    When combined with exercise and a calorie-restricted diet, lipolysis may be a great contributor to weight loss and fat burning.

    As such, multiple fat burners have ingredients that aim to affect lipolysis.

    Boosting Energy Levels

    In order to optimally lose weight, you have to go on a calorie-restricted diet, and you have to exercise. But in order to exercise while eating less food, you must have some energy to spend.

    That’s why many fat burner brands incorporate ingredients that boost your energy levels, with most of them being stimulants like caffeine anhydrous, green coffee berry extract, green tea extract, and guarana.

    Appetite Suppressant

    An important part of losing weight is being able to avoid empty calories or foods that contain unusual amounts of sugars, fats or oils (i.e: bread, candies, sweet beverages).

    Generally, these are foods we carelessly become addicted to, and these are also the foods that contribute to us getting overweight.

    Therefore, some fat burners contain ingredients that suppress our appetite, so that the painful process of maintaining a clean, healthy diet — free from those unhealthy foods — is easier.

    Dietary Fiber Also Plays a Role

    A legitimate plant-based diet is typically rich in fiber. Yet it also happens that fat burners have a certain amount of dietary fiber in their constitution.

    Dietary fiber is great for many reasons such as:

    • Normalizing bowel movements and maintaining bowel health;
    • Lowering cholesterol levels and controlling blood sugar levels;
    • But, more importantly, it allows you to feel satisfied for a longer period of time, which leads you to eat fewer calories and thus losing weight.

    That is part of the reason why a whole-foods plant-based diet is recommended for weight loss.

    Additional note

    Indeed, a fat burner has ingredients that address multiple facets of weight loss, which increase your chances of actually burning fat and/or losing weight — but for it to actually work, you have to be very disciplined about your eating habits and the frequency of your workouts.

    This is merely a supplement, not a replacement for a healthy lifestyle.

    Most Common Ingredients In Vegan Fat Burners

    Green Tea Extract

    an image of green tea to illustrate green tea extract

    Green tea has substances that can help you lose fat.

    One of those substances is caffeine, and the other substances are catechins. In conjunction, the substances are shown to contribute to weight loss because they regulate the hormones that can enhance thermogenesis. (1, 2, 3)

    Now, as you know, thermogenesis is a process by which your body burns calories to produce heat upon digestion. Green tea, according to research, has shown to accelerate this process by improving the effectiveness at which your body burns calories. (4)

    For example, in a 12-week study with 115 overweight women, researchers had the women take 856 mg of green tea extract daily— an amount that led to a 2.4-lb weight loss.

    orange peel

    Synephrine is a biogenic amine that can be found in the peels of citrus plants.

    There is still confusion and controversy over whether synephrine is safe and what actual effects the substance has on the body.

    When it comes to weight loss, there are a few potential benefits, but the studies covering those benefits are too small or contradicted by other studies.

    For instance, a study of 10 subjects given 50 mg of p-synephrine revealed that subjects burned 65 calories more than participants given placebo in the first 75 minutes after taking the supplement.

    You also have other similar studies that point to fat burning and performance-enhancing effects among subjects, but the studies are either too small, or there isn’t significant evidence to properly back up the claims made by supplement companies that tend to go overboard.

    Raspberry Ketones

    raspberry ketones

    Raspberry ketones are another ingredient often included in fat burning supplements.

    It is claimed that they cause the fat within cells to break down effectively, allowing the body to burn fat at a faster rate. In addition, they are also claimed to increase levels of adiponectin, a hormone that helps regulate metabolism.

    However, of all weight loss ingredients, it is the least promising because there are no actual tests done in humans. Most tests only show promising results on mice or rats.

    The interest in raspberry ketones arises from the fact it has a molecular structure that is very similar to two other molecules — synephrine and capsaicin (a substance found in chili peppers).

    Coleus Forskohlii

    plant from the mint family

    Forskohlii is a plant-based ingredient derived from the root of a member of the mint family as the Indian coleus. A plant that grows in Thailand, Nepal, and certain parts of India.

    In theory, Forskohlii has been used for weight loss because it helps create enzymes that free fatty acids from the body’s cells.

    Once they’re free, they can be burned as fuel without affecting lean body mass.

    However, this only works if you’re in a calorie deficit, so you must be burning more calories than you consume through food and drinks. So while Forskohlii may raise fat-burning capabilities, it won’t happen unless you’re committed to exercise and diet.

    In terms of research, the results of this ingredient are mixed. One study conducted on a small sample of overweight and obese men showed that Forskohlii reduced their body fat, but it had little effect on their weight. Apparently, it also increased their testosterone, which is a factor linked to lower weight and sustained weight loss.

    In a different study, 23 overweight females were given 250mg of Forskohlii twice a day for two weeks, which failed to help the women to lose weight. Yet, it also lessened any additional weight gain while they were taking it.

    This just shows that on its own, the ingredient cannot create miracles and although there is a chance it may help you lose weight, you need to diet and exercise.

    “Capsaicinoids” is the name given to a class of compounds found in members of the capsicum family, also known as peppers.

    The most common member is capsaicin which is the chemical compound that gives hot chili peppers their notable heat and is present in almost all peppers, but it varies in intensity.

    Again, there are claims that capsaicin can help speed up metabolism and reduce fat tissue, as well as control your appetite, preventing you from eating the wrong foods (or too much). (5)

    However, this cannot be confirmed for sure. But there are some studies that this compound may be of some benefit to weight loss. For example, according to a report published in Appetite, evidence was found that the consumption of a minimum of 2mg of capsaicinoids before a meal reduced energy intake by 74 calories during the meal.

    In addition to this report, there also other reports that show evidence in regards to an improvement related to metabolism and body fat.

    However, different scientific sources suggest that it’s still too soon to recommend capsaicin as a supplement. The evidence doesn’t show an overwhelming consensus.

    Can Anyone Benefit From a Fat Burner?

    Generally, anyone can rely on fat burners, but according to supplement companies, the groups of people who can benefit the most are the following:

    • Men of any age: Anyone over 18 who wants to shed off fat and a few pounds can take a fat burner. Since this is theoretically a supplement that can aid you with weight loss, you can use it in conjunction with a good diet and exercise in order to lose significant weight or just burn off the belly fat you accumulated during a holiday.
    • Weightlifters: Weightlifters, bodybuilding and fitness enthusiasts are probably the people who can rely on fat burners the most, given how their bodies must be conditioned to look a certain way once the competitive season comes around (especially bodybuilders).
    • People on “cutting” cycles: If you’re disciplined enough to follow a traditional bulk/cut cycle, then fat burners can provide you with an edge during cut cycles. The energy-boosting and appetite suppressing capabilities (and more), can make it easier to sustain intense workouts while being on a calorie-deficient diet to lose weight.
    • Aging men: As the body ages, so does our metabolism slow down and the testosterone in our body begins dropping. While I do believe exercise and diet are the most important aspects of losing weight, at a certain age it is bound to become more difficult. So fat burners may perhaps give you an edge that is hard to sustain when your metabolism and testosterone are low.

    How Should You Use A Fat Burner?

    Like any other supplement, you should pay close attention to the information on the product packaging. Most fat burners are pills or capsules, and usually require 2-3 doses a day.

    But remember, these supplements should only be used to help you achieve your goal of losing weight, and it should not go beyond that and become a long-term addiction. They’re typically meant for short 1-3 month cycles, which are the months where you may make the most out of it, because beyond that, your body may grow accustomed to it.

    Most people suggest taking this supplement in the morning in order to feel empowered as you start the day… but I’d say that 30 minutes – 1 hour before a workout can work really well.

    Fat burners have a high caffeine content, which can pump your energy levels and improve your performance during a workout, which will enable you to burn more calories in the process.

    Can I Use Fat Burners With Other Supplements?

    As far as I’m aware, there is no problem with taking other supplements in conjunction with a fat burner. In fact, you’re probably already taking a protein powder, pre-workout and so on.

    There’s always a risk that a certain ingredient in a supplement may not respond well to an ingredient from a different supplement — which is why I’d recommend you speak to a health expert before you start taking different supplements.

    Don’t take two different fat burners, or exceed the recommended dosage. A fat burner may naturally cause some side effects, but by not respecting the dosage, the negative side effects may be far from mild.

    Caffeine, for instance, can be quite dangerous if consumed in excess. That is present in weight loss supplements, pre-workouts, and so on. So respect the dosage and you’ll probably be fine.

    Do Fat Burners Have Any Side Effects?

    Every supplement has the potential to cause side effects.

    Fat burners are a type of supplement where the research isn’t all positively one-sided. As a result, you don’t know exactly what to expect in a fat burner, other than what is marketed by the brand, or by knowing the ingredients included in the recipe.

    Some use natural ingredients (which is the safest way to go), while others attempt to experiment by changing the ingredients to achieve a particular result. Since every product uses different ingredients, side effects may vary, so keep that in mind.

    Here are some of the most common side effects in fat burners:

    Difficulty sleeping

    Since most fat burners contain stimulants like caffeine that keep your brain awake and aware, there is a possibility it may cause difficulty falling asleep at night.

    Thus, if you want to avoid that happening to you, you need to treat them like regular caffeinated drinks and avoid them in the late afternoon or evening if you want to sleep soundly.

    Another side-effect of fat burners is dehydration. When you induce thermogenesis, there is an increase in body temperature, so your body uses more water than usual to cool down.

    This also means you need to drink significantly more water in order to stay hydrated.

    Other than these two side-effects, there should be nothing to worry about. However, remember not to abuse the number of dosages, otherwise, it can result in more severe side effects.

    Also, be sure to talk to a doctor before you decide to take any supplements out there.

    Losing weight can be a difficult thing to do. When you cut down the calories, that means your body is receiving less energy, so working out may become more arduous.

    That’s why pre-workout or fat-burning supplements can provide you with an edge when it comes to sustaining and maintaining discipline in a challenging weight-loss adventure. Before you buy any supplement, you have to nail down your diet and commitment to exercise, otherwise, the supplement won’t work at all.

    Fat burners have a bad reputation because a lot of the claims are blown out of proportion, but the ingredients in these supplements do have evidence in favor of weight loss benefits.

    However, it’s not a miracle solution, and should only be used to maximize your diet and exercise.
