Which Ruffles Are Actually Vegan?

Which Ruffles Are Actually Vegan?

Akin to Doritos, Lays, Tostitos, and dozens of other potato chip brands, Ruffles are also owned by FritoLay, an American subsidiary of PepsiCo that manufactures, markets, and sells snack foods, more notably chips. Ruffles are among the best performing chips in terms of sales, with a reported $870M chips sold in 2017. It’s no surprise that so many people are aching to know if they’re vegan.

Fortunately, Ruffles do have some vegan flavors. Like most chips, you’re able to find flavors free from animal ingredients and others with animal derivatives like cheese and sour cream.

In this article, we’re going to dive into a bit more detail to show you exactly which Ruffles are actually vegan, which ones are not, and we’re also going to speak about a few questionable ingredients that may derange some vegans from eating specific vegan-friendly Ruffles.

Note: The nutritional information in this blog post was taken directly from Ruffles’ official website.

Vegan Ruffles Flavors

Ruffles Original Potato Chips

ruffles original

These are the original Ruffles and despite the mayonnaise-looking bowl on the packaging, the ingredients for the originals are quite simple.

Here are the ingredients:

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Corn, And/Or Canola Oil)
  • Salt

It doesn’t have a single ingredient that would make you question. Needless to say, these Ruffles are 100% vegan.

Ruffles All Dressed Potato Chips

ruffles all dressed

The All-Dressed flavored Ruffles are the best-selling flavor in Canada. They present a blend of salty, savory, and sweet flavors, much like a mixture of salt & vinegar, ketchup, and BBQ flavors all in one.

You may find it surprising but these Ruffles have no animal ingredients:

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Corn, and/or Canola Oil)
  • Maltodextrin [Made from Corn]
  • Sugar
  • Sodium Diacetate
  • Salt
  • Dextrose
  • Torula Yeast
  • Monosodium Glutamate
  • Spices
  • Sodium Acetate
  • Garlic Powder
  • Onion Powder
  • Sunflower Oil
  • Malic Acid
  • Paprika Extracts
  • And Natural Flavors

However, if you’ve been following this blog for a while, you certainly know about the existence of certain questionable ingredients that some vegans avoid. One of those ingredients is sugar and is present in this particular flavor.

Why Sugar May Not Be Vegan

Well, sugar is typically derived from two sources: sugarcane and sugar beets.

While they’re quite similar in both taste and texture, they’re processed very differently. Sugar derived from sugar beets is processed in a way that is always vegan-friendly, but the same can’t be said about cane sugar.

Unfortunately, in some instances, cane sugar is processed, filtered, and bleached using bone char, which is essentially a charcoal-like powder derived from animal bones, more specifically cattle.

cattle

We don’t know if the sugar in the All Dressed Ruffles is processed with bone char, but what usually happens is that big companies such as Frito-Lay often have a mixed pool of sugar suppliers, including ones that use bone char, which also means it’s impossible to trace what type of sugar is in a product.

Click here if you want to learn more details about the use of bone char in sugar.

Ruffles Tapatio Limon Flavored Chips

Ruffles tapatio

Ruffles Tapatio Lemon-flavored chips are not found on Ruffle’s official website, but you can actually find them at Walmart, which is where I found them.

To my surprise, these chips don’t have any animal ingredients:

  • Maltodextrin (From Corn)
  • Sodium Diacetate
  • Spices
  • Salt
  • Natural Flavors (From Lime)
  • Modified Corn Starch
  • Monosodium Glutamate
  • Garlic Powder
  • Artificial Colors (Red 40 Lake and Yellow 6 Lake)

While you won’t find an animal ingredient, these lime-flavored chips contain artificial colors.

Some vegans are against products that contain artificial colors (and flavors) because they are essentially a by-product of animal testing. Or in the very least, that’s the argument used.

Artificial Colors Are Still Tested on Animals

Plus, it turns out that artificial colors are tested to prevent potential health risks on humans, which is why you’re able to find tests on the artificial color Red 40 Lake that are as recent as 2017 and 2018.

Technically, artificial colors are vegan (as they’re not synthesized from animal ingredients), but the issue with animal testing continues to dissuade some vegans from consuming them.

Non-Vegan Ruffles Flavors

Ruffles Lime & Jalapeno Flavored Chips

lime and jalapeno ruffles

These chips are flavored with plant-based ingredients (lime & jalapeño), but unfortunately, Frito-Lay has found a way to introduce milk-based ingredients.

Here are the ingredients listed on Ruffles’ official website:

  • Potatoes
  • Vegetable Oil (Sunflower, Corn, and/or Canola Oil)
  • Maltodextrin [Made from Corn]
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Natural Flavors
  • Dextrose
  • Onion Powder
  • Jalapeño Pepper
  • Lime Juice Concentrate
  • Yeast
  • Buttermilk
  • Sour Cream [Cultured Cream, Skim Milk]
  • Garlic Powder
  • Spices
  • Whey
  • Yeast Extract
  • And Artificial Flavors.

You’ll find pretty much the same animal-based ingredients (Whey and Buttermilk) in every non-vegan Ruffles, which is not surprising because they’re naturally occurring proteins in milk.

If you want lime and jalapeño flavored chips, Late July Snacks have a great vegan alternative.

Summary: Not All Ruffles Are Vegan

To be more precise, Ruffles has three vegan-friendly flavors, including Ruffles Original Potato Chips, Ruffles All Dressed Flavored Chips, and Ruffles Tapatio Limon Flavored Chips.

The remaining flavors contain animal ingredients such as buttermilk, cheese, chicken fat, sour cream, and many other ingredients that are common in popular flavored chips.

And that’s pretty much everything you need to know about the vegan status of Ruffles. If you feel like this short blog post has helped you in any way, please share with others that may find it helpful.

Top 2 Vegan Recommendations in 2021

  1. This is hands down our favorite vegan supplement. It’s not your typical multivitamin because it was created from vegans to vegans. It contains vitamin B12, vitamin D, and the Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA). These ingredients are delivered in the right doses, so that you never have to worry about a potential deficiency in the future. Feel free to read my review on the supplement as well.
  2. Our second recommendation is this amazing vegan starter kit. It is actually a bundle with 9 e-books that will help you lead a healthy, vegan lifestyle. It has great advice, and it includes print-outs and checklists that will allow you to easily put theory into practice, particularly if you’re new to the vegan lifestyle. This is a recommendation I’ve also included in my essential vegan products page as well.
