What stores sell jackfruit?

Jackfruit is common in many tropical and subtropical parts of the world such as India, Malaysia, Central, and Eastern Africa, the Caribbean, Florida, Brazil, Australia, Puerto Rico, and many Pacific Islands.

But even though it’s not grown in the United States, jackfruit is imported and you’re likely to be able to find it in the following supermarkets or co-ops:

Whole Foods: This is probably the place where you have the highest chance of finding any exotic fruit. The produce aisle generally has jackfruit when it’s in season, but you’re also able to find it in other forms as well.

Walmart: Walmart is yet another retailer that is very likely to have jackfruit available, whether it’s fresh or canned. The company’s store locator on its website will help you figure out what type of jackfruit is being sold locally and online.

Amazon: Another place to get your jackfruit is through Amazon – because, well, they literally sell everything. You have to be careful, however, especially if you’re trying to order fresh jackfruit. Some people are disappointed to find their jackfruit overripe and moldy upon arrival.

Trader Joe’s: Here’s another place where you may be able to find jackfruit and jackfruit products, including Trader Joe’s original Green Jackfruit In Brine.

Safeway: Safeway supermarkets are a good place to find fresh, canned, and many other forms of jackfruit.

Kroger: This is another store where you’re able to find different varieties of jackfruit.

Publix: Another place where you might find fresh jackfruit is Publix, and if that’s not the case, you may at least be able to find a canned version of it.

Multi-Cultural Markets: Because jackfruit is native to tropical and subtropical regions, markets, where there are different cultures, will generally have it. In fact, the best exotic fruits can often be found in these markets, and jackfruit is not any different. Seek the Asian-specific market, it’s your best bet to find ripe jackfruit.

Interesting fact about jackfruit:
In Brazil, the jackfruit tree is deemed as an invasive species. It was introduced in the region in the late 17th century and now outcompetes local trees.

In which aisle is jackfruit in?

Once you step into the supermarket or grocery store, the first area you will want to visit is the produce aisle, because it’s where you will find the jackfruit and many other fruits and vegetables.

Look for a large, spiky fruit with a mix of green and yellow colors (exactly like the one in the image below).

Jackfruit is also processed into different forms like bite-sized bits, dried jackfruit, canned jackfruit, and you can also find it as part of a prepackaged complete meal.

Because of that, you also be able to find jackfruit in the aisles where dry, canned, and frozen goods are. Another place you may be able to find jackfruit is in the international aisle, more specifically the Asian section.

When is jackfruit in season?

Jackfruit is usually ripe from March to June or from April to September, but it often comes down to the climate in the specific region where it is grown.

Some off-season crops may also be ripe between September and December.

One single jackfruit tree can yield between 100 and 200 fruits on an annual basis, with the average fruit weighing from 10 to 25 pounds. A select few can even go up to 100 pounds.

What does jackfruit taste like?

When not ripe, the jackfruit has a rather neutral flavor that can work well with savory dishes because it can soak up the seasonings and spices, as well as blend in with other ingredients with a more striking flavor.

When it’s eaten ripe and raw, the taste is very similar to other fruits like mangos, bananas, and pineapples.
