Pre Lab Pro Pre-Workout: Honest Science-Based Review (2022)

In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about Pre Lab Pro, including ingredients and their potential benefits, price, and taste to help you determine whether or not this supplement is a solid purchase. 

Pre Lab Pro Ingredients & Benefits

To fully understand whether or not Pre Lab Pro is effective, one has to analyze each ingredient through the lens of the existing scientific evidence and determine whether it actually does something to improve your performance and results in and outside the gym. 

Let’s look at each ingredient in Pre Lab Pro and determine what role it plays in the formula and whether it’s actually effective for what it’s supposed to achieve. 

Natural Caffeine (from Coffea Robusta Seeds)

One of the most common ingredients in pre-workout formulas is caffeine, not only because it’s one of the most studied ingredients in sports nutrition but because it’s also incredibly effective at providing athletes with the energy they need to withstand an intense workout.

Pre Lab Pro contains 80 milligrams of caffeine derived from authentic coffee beans, and according to the existing lengthy body of scientific evidence, caffeine does improve physical strength and endurance. However, Pre Lab Pro doesn’t have a particularly high dose of caffeine.

Higher doses of 3–6 mg/kg of body weight are typically used to increase strength, so Pre Lab Pro would need to contain 3x-4x times more caffeine to play a role in strength increase.

With that being said, caffeine and its respective effects are subject to tolerance, which means if you’re already someone that consumes a lot of caffeine, then the beneficial effects of caffeine may not be felt. 

L-Theanine

L-theanine is a naturally occurring non-proteinogenic amino acid that is found in tea and other natural sources, and its main benefits are associated with promoting a relaxed state without causing drowsiness.

However, according to this 2008 study1, L-theanine combined with caffeine may lead to mild cognitive-enhancing effects such as improved speed and accuracy in attention-switching tasks, as well as lowering susceptibility to distracting information in memory tasks. 

From what we’ve gathered, L-theanine doesn’t seem to increase performance as far as physical exercise is concerned, however, it could potentially counteract the drowsiness effect of caffeine (also known as caffeine crash).

L-Tyrosine

L-Tyrosine is an amino acid that is naturally produced in the body from another amino acid called phenylalanine.

Many studies show that L-tyrosine can help to prevent declined cognitive function under stressful, cognitively demanding conditions. 2 

It is thought that L-Tyrosine aids in the production of adrenaline (also known as noradrenaline or norepinephrine) and dopamine, two hormones (called “catecholamines”) that may help to reduce stress when exposed to particularly acute stressors.

The evidence does not suggest that tyrosine raises adrenaline levels; rather, it is important to have plenty of tyrosine on hand because when you encounter an acute stressor that is stressful enough to cause a depletion of those catecholamines, it will essentially support the processes of producing more.

This basically means that when you’re doing something stressful, like exercising, tyrosine may improve your mental clarity and focus, diluting your perception of fatigue and providing you with extra endurance. 

This is the theoretical rationale for how tyrosine may work, however, there’s still no solid evidence demonstrating that L-tyrosine does improve physical performance. Still, you’ll see it in many supplements, not only in pre-workouts. 

L-Citrulline

L-Citrulline, or simply Citrulline, is a non-essential amino acid, and based on the evidence available, supplementation with citrulline, both short-term and long-term, can increase muscle, reduce fatigue, increase power output, and improve endurance in both aerobic and anaerobic exercise. 3, 4

However, it is important to note that most of the evidence available is quite mixed, which means that the effects of L-Citrulline are not set in stone.

Additionally, the documented sports performance benefits of L-Citrulline were with subjects taking 6,000 – 8,000 milligrams of citrulline malate per serving, but this supplement only contains 2,000 milligrams per serving, which is on the low end. 

Does this mean the role of L-Citrulline in this supplement is null? Well, one has to wonder since many of the studies conducted with L-Citrulline used way higher doses. 

Red Beet Powder

Red beet powder is essentially a powder derived from beets, and as someone who is vegan, beets are something that I like to keep in my diet because it’s full of valuable vitamins and minerals, as well as antioxidants. Red beet powder contains higher concentrations of these substances. It’s very beneficial. 

Below, we’re gonna go over some of the vitamins and minerals present in Pre Lab Pro, and go over why, in general, some may be beneficial to have in a pre-workout supplement such as this one. 

Vitamins & Minerals

Aside from caffeine and different amino acids that may affect performance, Pre Lab Pro also contains a variety of vitamins and minerals that are important for exercise. 

  • Vitamin D

Vitamin D is associated with a range of benefits, including improved immune health, bone health, and well-being. Supplementation may also reduce the risk of cancer mortality, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. 5

While it doesn’t directly play a role in exercise, the fact that it contributes to your overall well-being is quite crucial, even more so if you have low sun exposure. 

  • Riboflavin (or Vitamin B2)

Supplementation of riboflavin is not required with a good diet nor does it provide you with any benefits as far as physical performance is concerned, but it’s still an essential vitamin your body needs for regular bodily functions.

  • Vitamin B6

Another one of the B vitamins, vitamin B6, is needed by the body to create a required coenzyme. There don’t seem to be any very compelling reasons to take vitamin B6 as a supplement, however. 

  • Folate

Folate (vitamin B-9) is important in red blood cell formation and for healthy cell growth and function. The nutrient is crucial during early pregnancy to reduce the risk of birth defects in the brain and spine. However, it doesn’t play a role in sports performance, so it’s quite irrelevant in this case. 

  • Vitamin B12

If you’re vegan, having vitamin B12 in a supplement is always helpful, so if you’re vegan and are taking a sports performance supplement, taking some extra Vitamin B12 is always a plus. Other than that, it doesn’t have an effect on physical performance. 

  • Potassium

Potassium is an essential mineral in the human diet that is found in relatively high amounts in fruits, vegetables, and legumes. 

It is an important mineral because it’s involved in muscle stimulation and contraction. In fact, it is the main mineral known for cramp prevention, which is something you wish to prevent as it’s quite painful. 6

  • Iron

Iron is an essential mineral best known for allowing blood to carry oxygen between tissues, however, its supplementation is only recommended in case of deficiency. 

A lack of iron tends to produce fatigue, depression, impaired cognitive function, restless leg syndrome, and other adverse effects. But this is only if you have insufficient or deficient levels of iron. 7

The reason why iron supplementation is not always recommended for the average healthy person is because it can lead to iron poisoning. In other words, only take iron under your doctor’s advice. 

With that being said, Pre Lab Pro only contains 2.5 milligrams of iron per serving, which is low as it only represents 18% of the recommended daily amount. 

Pre Lab Pro Taste

Before we tell how Pre Lab Pro tastes, allow us to say that this supplement is only available in a single flavor, which is a natural berry flavor, or more specifically a combination of different berries, i.e. strawberry and blackberry.

Inside the canister, you’ll find a pink powder with a very fruity aroma akin to strawberry-flavored gum. As far as flavor goes, It has a very sweet gum-like taste that remains in the mouth for a couple of minutes, which is not super pleasant in my opinion. 

It is very low in sugars, which is thanks to natural and artificial sweeteners like xylitol, monk fruit, and stevia, plus, so on a macro level, it’s technically healthier than supplements that rely on refined sugar. 

Pre Lab Pro Price

Pre Lab Pro is a premium pre-workout supplement, and this means it’s not the most affordable out there, and that is especially true because it comes with 20 servings per canister. 

One single canister costs $59, which is equivalent to $2.95 per serving, and that’s quite high. 

You’re able to get a better price by buying this supplement in bulk, for instance, if you buy three canisters, you can bring the price down to $2.21 per serving, and this is because you’ll get an extra canister for free. 

The reason why Pre Lab Pro is expensive is that they’re using patented ingredients (i.e: Nutrigenesis, Aljipure, etc) which is not entirely a bad thing because it guarantees you are getting the active ingredient you’re paying for at the advertised strength, and it also typically means that the ingredient itself has undergone research (albeit the research is funded by private companies who would have an interest in seeing their patented products succeed, which is something we tend to be quite skeptical about)

Is Pre Lab Pro Actually Effective?

Pre Lab Pro is a premium-grade supplement, however, based on the ingredients it contains and the respective dosages, we believe you can find a more effective supplement on the market for a better price. 

While it is an interesting option with unique ingredients, the ingredients that impact physical performance are not available in effective dosages (i.e: caffeine, l-citrulline). 

Additionally, Pre Lab Pro is quite expensive at $2.95 per serving, which is too high for a pre-workout supplement.
