Finding a multivitamin isn’t always an easy task, and depending on whether you’re male or female, or a child, you’re probably going to have different nutritional needs. Unlike other supplements like protein powders, creatine, or even branched-chained amino acids, a multivitamin is not a one-size-fits-all solution.
Men, women, and children have different nutritional needs, in fact, one of the best examples I can give you is associated with the fact women lose a lot of blood (from menstruation), which means they require more iron than men in general, so a multivitamin with more iron is ideal.
On that same note, a multivitamin with too much iron might not be a good option for men. In general, our bodies are unable to excrete excess iron, and if we allow too much of it to be stored in our liver, heart, and pancreas, it can create life-threatening conditions such as liver disease, heart problems, and diabetes.
This liquid multivitamin formula by Mary Ruth’s doesn’t contain iron, so it’s probably a better option for men, despite what the brand may claim.
Mary Ruth’s Multivitamin Features
This multivitamin is different from most multivitamins on the market, but not conceptually, as it contains vitamins and minerals that you’ll see in other products.
Let’s look at some of the features of this multivitamin so that you can better choose what’s best for you.
The biggest difference between this multivitamin and other multivitamins is in how the nutrients are delivered— while most multivitamins come in the form of pills, Mary Ruth’s multivitamin comes in liquid form.
While I’m someone that can swallow pills/capsules with ease, there are people with a powerful gag reflex that have a really hard time with pills. For those people, a liquid supplement is ideal.
An additional benefit is that liquid supplements take less time to break down and be absorbed. If your body has a hard time absorbing nutrients, a liquid vitamin may be easier to take than pills or tablets.
With that being said, some essential nutrients should be absorbed slowly, so you should be pretty mindful about how you feel when taking a liquid multivitamin supplement. If you feel lightheaded or dizzy, be sure to contact your doctor or physician.
Unlike pills or tablets, the fact that this supplement comes in liquid form means the manufacturers can confer it with different flavors.
As of right now, Mary Ruth’s multivitamin is available in raspberry and strawberry flavors.
The flavors are pretty delicious, but if you feel like it tastes too much like medicine, you can always add it to a smoothie or mix it with a different beverage to make it interesting.
A Wide Variety of Vitamins & Minerals
The reason people take multivitamins is that they often lead busy lifestyles that don’t allow them to have a varied diet will all the nutrients necessary for optimal health.
The list of ingredients in this multivitamin is varied and it includes vitamins such as Vitamin A (beta-carotene), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (D-alpha tocopherol), Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), Vitamin B7 (biotin), Vitamin B9 (folate), and Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin).
It also contains a variety of minerals such as chromium and zinc, as well as other substances such as branched chained amino acids (L-leucine, L-isoleucine, and L-valine), Methylsulphonylmethane (MSM), and others.
From what I can tell, it contains more than just vitamins and minerals, so it’s certainly a more complete product, particularly when compared to other multivitamins.
Each serving contains 1 to 5 times the amount of nutrients you need on a daily basis, except for a few minerals like zinc and chromium.
One of the things I don’t like about this multivitamin is that it lacks certain minerals such as iron, which is a highly important mineral for human health.
It is a mineral the body needs for growth and development. Your body uses iron for hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. Your body also needs iron to make some hormones.
This multivitamin also lacks other essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, which I believe are more important than a lot of the extras like branched-chained amino acids, etc.
With that being said, it’s still a well-rounded multivitamin, and it’s certainly more convenient given that it comes in a liquid form, as it’s easier to digest and makes nutrients more bioavailable to the body.
Organic & Non-GMO
This multivitamin, like all products by Mary Ruth’s, is certified organic, which means few or no chemicals or used during the manufacturing process.
According to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), only five percent of a product’s ingredients are allowed to be non-organic and still be approved for certification. However, there is a strict list of ingredients that are permitted even though they’re not organic.
GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) are usually not part of that list, but there might be some exceptions.
Mary Ruth’s multivitamin doesn’t contain the common GMOs like soy lecithin or cornstarch, and because of that, the price of the product will always be higher than other options.
With that being said, this multivitamin is a healthier alternative to common multivitamins, mainly because it uses organic ingredients (without chemicals), and it avoids GMO ingredients that might upset the stomach.
Allergy & Vegan-Friendly
Besides being organic and GMO-free, Mary Ruth’s multivitamin is also allergy-free and vegan-friendly, so it caters to a much wider audience, and that in itself is another reason why I like this supplement.
Being a vegan myself, I can consume this supplement without having to feel guilty since it is free from animal ingredients and respective derivatives.
In addition, it also doesn’t contain gluten, soy, nuts, and naturally, dairy. Therefore, if you’re allergic to those ingredients (something we often see in the broader population), you’re able to consume this multivitamin.
No Added Sugars
Even though it’s nice to have a sugary treat, consuming too much sugar is very bad for your health, so you’ll always have someone who wants to avoid sugar at all costs.
Despite being delivered in a flavorsome liquid form, this multivitamin does not contain any added sugars.
Mary Ruth uses fruit juice, which consists of natural sugars, rather than added sugars. They use Triple UV Deionized Water in the manufacturing process, which confers the liquid with sweetness.
Other ingredients like vegetable glycerin and noni juice are also used as sweeteners.
Is Mary Ruth’s Multivitamin Effective?
After having analyzed the different ingredients and respective vitamins and minerals, I’m pretty sure this multivitamin is effective and it will provide you with a stable intake of essential nutrients.
The aspect I appreciate the most about this multivitamin is the fact it comes in a liquid form, which for many people is very convenient since not everyone can easily swallow capsules or tablets.
What’s more, because it comes in a liquid form, the body can more easily absorb the vitamins and minerals. This isn’t possible with capsules or tablets, because they have to first be broken down by the acid in the stomach, thus making the absorption process a little prolonged.
However, that combined with the use of organic and GMO-free ingredients makes the product a more expensive one, but it’s definitely a worthwhile choice for anyone who can afford it.
The supplement doesn’t contain a few essential minerals (i.e: iron, magnesium, and potassium) which I believe are important to overall health, so I do think it’s lacking variety-wise.
How Should You Use It?
Mary Ruth suggests starting with ½, or even ¼, the recommended dose to see how your body reacts to the multivitamin given that it’s quite a potent product.
This will vary from individual to individual, but you may find that you do better with a smaller dosage.
The multivitamin should be taken on an empty stomach or with food, or mixed with your favorite beverage.
How Much Does It Cost?
This multivitamin contains 32 servings per bottle and it costs $39.95, which is equivalent to $1.24 per serving, making it quite expensive for a multivitamin.
However, the use of organic ingredients and the lack of GMOs ensure that healthier (and more expensive) ingredients are included in the formula. This increases the manufacturing cost of the product, so customers will have to spend more for having a better quality product.
With that being said, Mary Ruth will give you a 10% discount if you opt-in to their recurring subscription service— which allows you to receive their multivitamin on a more frequent basis.
Therefore, instead of paying $39.95 for a bottle, you’ll be able to have it for $35.96.
Is It Safe For Children?
According to Mary Ruth, children, ages two and upward, can use the multivitamin.
However, they also recommend that before giving the formula to your children, you should show their formula to your physician, pediatrician, or healthcare professional to see if it’s a good fit.
A healthcare professional will know what’s best for your child, and this is even more imperative if your child has certain health conditions and is taking other supplements or medication.
Should It Be Refrigerated?
Typically, multivitamins do not require refrigeration because they’re available in capsules or tablets, which can be stored at room temperature.
However, because this multivitamin comes in liquid form, you should refrigerate it as soon as you open it. Don’t worry if you forget to refrigerate it once in a while. Some customers have left the multivitamin outside for 7 days without it getting spoiled, but the brand suggests a limit of 5 days.
