Have you ever wondered what the world’s wealthiest people eat? As fellow vegans, we’re always curious about the dietary choices of influential figures, especially when it comes to someone like Bill Gates.
Known for his philanthropy and business acumen, Gates has become an influential figure in the global discussion on climate change and sustainability. But is he a vegan?
In this blog post, we’ll explore his dietary habits and stance on sustainability.
Is Bill Gates Vegan or Vegetarian?

Before we dive into Gates’ eating habits, let’s quickly clarify the difference between veganism and vegetarianism.
Vegans abstain from consuming animal products entirely, including meat, dairy, and eggs, while vegetarians avoid only meat.
So, with that in mind, is Gates vegan or vegetarian?
Gates has not explicitly identified himself as a vegan or vegetarian, but he has made statements in the past indicating that a shift to an increasingly meatless society could be a good thing.
In fact, he admitted to eating some meat, primarily chicken, but also mentioned a reduction in his beef consumption.
With that being said, sources such as Vice, have picked up on the fact that Gates’ speech has shifted from a meat-reduction one to something more ambivalent.
For example, Vice’s author brings up Gates’ very own blog post where he reveals that he barely made it as a vegetarian for even one year (decades ago) and called it a “good thing” that per-capita meat consumption is on the rise worldwide.
Gates’ View on The Plant-Based Diet
As a thought leader and global influencer, Gates’ dietary choices have the potential to impact not only his immediate circle but also inspire others around the world.
Gates acknowledged the critical role of alternative protein sources in addressing the challenges of feeding a growing global population while minimizing the environmental impact of animal agriculture.
He has highlighted the need for increased investment in research and development of new protein sources, such as cultured meat and plant-based proteins, to meet the rising demand for sustainable and nutritious food.
Alas, whether these stem from believing in the impact of these new foods, or whether it’s something he sees as a purely good investment given the demand for meat alternatives by people who seek a meatless lifestyle, I’m personally more inclined to believe in the latter.
It’s true that Gates often advocates for policies and initiatives that promote sustainable agriculture, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and food security for all— however, that doesn’t mean he directly supports a plant-based style or whether he believes that might be the right way to approach the environmental crisis.
Bill Gates’ Stance on Sustainability and Plant-Based Diets
Gates’ Investments in Alternative Proteins
Gates has invested in several alternative protein companies, and some of his investments are certainly some brands you’ve probably heard about, including:
- Beyond Meat
- Impossible Foods
- Memphis Meats
While these investments may imply that Gates believes in the potential of plant-based and lab-grown meats to revolutionize the food industry, that’s not to say he is consuming these products himself.
He has mentioned that rich nations should shift entirely to synthetic beef, but for nations in Africa, he asserts that it’s necessary to raise raise the amount of beef per emissions.
Gates’ Views on Climate Change
In his book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster,” Gates emphasizes the importance of dietary changes in mitigating climate change.
He discusses the impact of animal agriculture on greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and deforestation.
Gates also advocates, as I’ve mentioned, for a shift towards lab-made meats to replace beef given the amount of CO2 emissions released in the animal industry, particularly when it pertains to cows.
Tips for Eco-Conscious Eating
Reduce Meat Consumption
Regardless of whether or not he truly believes in a plant-based diet, Gates did mention in his book that reducing meat consumption may have a significant impact on our environmental footprint.
Here are some tips to get started:
- Start With Meatless Mondays: Dedicate one day per week to consuming only plant-based meals.
- Gradually Increase Plant-based Meals in Your Diet: Slowly incorporate more plant-based options into your daily routine, making the transition more manageable.
Support Alternative Protein Sources
Experiment with alternative protein sources to diversify your diet and reduce your reliance on animal products:
- Try Plant-based Meat Alternatives like Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods: These products closely resemble the taste and texture of traditional meat, making them an excellent choice for those looking to cut back on animal consumption.
However, keep in mind that these should be eaten in moderation as they’re not what I would call a healthy option. - Experiment With Alternative Protein Sources: Alternative protein sources like legumes, tofu, and tempeh are nutritious, versatile, and environmentally friendly.
Compared to plant-based meat, I would say that these foods are way more nutritious and should be the default protein sources for a well-planned plant-based diet.
Educate Yourself on the Environmental Impact of Food Choices
Knowledge is power, and educating yourself on the environmental impact of your food choices can inspire more conscious decision-making.
We recommend reading books and articles on the topic, like “The New Climate War: The Fight To Take Back Our Planet” by Michael E. Mann.
Also, you can watch documentaries that explore the environmental implications of food choices, in fact, there’s one called “Food Choices”, which is available on Youtube.
Vote With Your Wallet
Support companies and practices that prioritize sustainability:
- Choose products from companies committed to eco-friendly practices
- Opt for locally sourced, seasonal produce when possible.
Conclusion
While Bill Gates may not identify as a vegan or vegetarian, he seems to show a commitment to the environment by investing in companies that bring forward more sustainable solutions, such as lab-made meats.
In fact, he has stated before that developed countries should do a complete shift to lab-made meats, which is perhaps an obvious statement coming from someone that has invested in these industries.
In any case, embracing a plant-based lifestyle or reducing meat consumption does lead to various health and environmental benefits. And might I suggest that shifting to a plant-based diet can be done without relying on lab-made meats given the diversity of plant-based foods available and all the nutrients they contain.
As you embark on this journey, remember to respect and acknowledge the diverse perspectives within the vegan community.
We all have different reasons for making these choices, and by maintaining a balance between factual information and emotional considerations, we can create an inclusive and supportive environment.
