Frankly, I wasn’t sure if I should write this blog post, because according to IHOP’s Facebook page, they receive a lot of heat for different reasons.
Whether it’s bad service, lack of hygiene or bad food, you can find all sorts of criticism.
Regardless, this is the spot where you’ll meet up with friends at 2 AM, watching them munch on pancakes drizzled with honey, or strawberry sauce.
Does IHOP offer any vegan options? Yes, it does offer some vegan options, including:
- Sauteéd Vegetables
- English Muffins with jam
- Baked Potato
- Hash Brown
- Fruit Cup
- Minestrone Soup
- Coffee (Plus other beverages)
However, I’m afraid you won’t be able to eat the famous pancakes since the dough contains butter and eggs. As such, you’ll have to stick to the vegan options above. If you’re interested in knowing a bit more about the aforementioned vegan options, keep reading.
10 Vegan Options at IHOP
IHOP does offer some vegan options, but do not expect to be amazed. IHOP is known for its pancakes, which are pretty much out of bounds for any vegan.
Though you can find less caloric (and perhaps healthier) options like:
#1 – Sautéed Veggies
Typically, this dish comes with an omellete, but you can choose to skip the eggs and dairy, and you’ll receive a dish filled with sautéed vegetables. Instead of getting the omelette, you can opt for different sides to complete the meal.
#2 – Fries
A restaurant without fries is not a restaurant. If you’re not happy with any of the other options, you can always sit back, grab some fries and dip them in ketchup.
#3 – English Muffin with Jam
If you want a vegan meal that is jam-packed, you can simply grab the 100% vegan English muffins from IHOP. They make up for a terrific breakfast on an ideal cheat day. Otherwise, if you want to stay a tad bit healthy, you can always pair them with strawberries, bananas or avocados.
#4 – Baked Potato
Baked potato also counts as a delicious side. Instead of fries to go with your sautéed vegetables, you can try adding a baked potato seasoned with salt and pepper.
#5 – Hash Browns
What are Hash Browns? Well, they’re frozen shredded potatoes cooked on a flat top grill at 350 degrees. Not the healthiest option due to crazy amounts of oil used, but they’re delicious.
Generally, Hash Browns come with two slices of bacon and eggs but you can drop that.
#6 – Fruit Cup
Again, it’s not much, but IHOP has a fruit bowl. You can ask for avocado, watermelon, grapes, pineapple, oranges, and more. Plus, don’t expect the fruit to be fresh.
#7 – Salad
Here’s another typical vegan dish, whose flavor will depend on the dressing you use. IHOP has both the House Salad and the Citrus Chicken Pecan Salad. One is vegan and the other is vegan if you decide to remove the chicken.
A salad is a salad— but what’s convenient about IHOP is that they have a Fat-Free Raspberry Vinaigrette, a Catalina Dressing, an Orange Vinaigrette, and a Raspberry Vinaigrette, all of which are vegan.
#8 – Oatmeal
Some people and restaurants cook oatmeal by soaking the oats in cow’s milk, but at IHOP’s the oatmeal is vegan. Plus, you can add ingredients like brown sugar, bananas, strawberries, nuts, vegan-friendly syrups or perhaps other peculiar ingredients close to your preference.
#9 – The Good Ol’ Coffee
There’s no question that coffee is vegan. But if you want to add a different flavor other than refined sugar, you can use one of the various syrups IHOP has available. In fact, all of IHOP’s syrups are vegan with Butter Pecan syrup being the sole exception.
#10 – Minestrone Soup
IHOP also sells minestrone soup.
A bowl of typical minestrone soup is packed with vegetables such as carrot, celery, onion, garlic, seasonal vegetables (potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, butternut squash, green beans or peas), diced tomatoes, vegetable broth, and in some cases it might be topped with parmesan cheese.
If you want to keep it vegan, make sure the folks at IHOP don’t put cheese on it.
Summary: IHOP Has Vegan Options.
Even though IHOP has vegan options, they’re very poor.
Other than the English Muffin, which you can top with syrups, fruits, and jam — the rest of the options aren’t very enticing if you know what I mean.
This being said, if you head out to IHOP to accompany your friends, at least you know you don’t have to watch them eat, and you can get something of your own.
However, it’s likely that you won’t be eating anything as delicious as them.
