Turmeric has a history of long use in Ayurveda, also known as traditional Indian medicine.
It contains compounds called curcuminoids, the most notable one being curcumin, which in itself has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It may reduce pain from arthritis, regulate blood sugar levels, and improve cholesterol levels, among other benefits.
While it’s true that you can easily incorporate curcumin in your diet as a seasoning for food, turmeric supplements offer a more concentrated version of curcumin, meaning it’s also more effective.
Here are four of the best vegan turmeric supplements on the market.
4 Best Vegan Turmeric Supplements
Transparent Labs Curcumin C3 Supplement
Although it does not have turmeric in its name, this supplement by Transparent Labs contains curcumin, the most prominent compound in turmeric.
In fact, it contains curcumin extract, a highly concentrated form of curcumin that contains 95% bioactive curcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin, and demethoxycurcumin.
Unfortunately, curcumin (and related compounds) are generally not well-absorbed orally and need an additional compound to aid in its absorption.
Transparent Labs has included Bioperine, an active compound present in black pepper that has been shown in studies to increase the absorption rate of curcumin.
Additionally, their capsules HPMC capsules also aid in that regard, as they dissolve easily and allow the concentrated curcumin extract to better reach the bloodstream.
Another positive aspect of this supplement is that it comes with 60 servings, unlike the other supplements on this list, which come with only 30 servings.
It offers great value for money, so as a supplement, it’s a great choice.
However, Transparent Labs is not a 100% vegan brand, as it sells other supplements that contain animal-based ingredients, which is something some vegans might not appreciate.

What we like about Future Kind is that it’s a true vegan brand that is not afraid to label itself in that way as it sticks by known vegan principles.
As for the actual supplement, Future Kind created a supplement that combines curcumin powder and black pepper (Bioperine) for a more cost-efficient formula.
However, unlike turmeric extract, powdered turmeric has a more diluted concentration of curcumin.
Some experts suggest that powdered turmeric is a less effective form of curcumin, as it dilutes a bit of the existing bioavailability.
Still, the supplement contains 700 mg of turmeric, which is quite significant, so I don’t believe this different form of turmeric will be that inferior to turmeric extract.
What I don’t like about this supplement is that you have to take two tablets to consume a single serving, which is quite inconvenient, particularly if you don’t like to swallow tablets.
Additionally, unlike the Transparent Labs supplement, this one only has 30 servings, and the cost per serving is higher in comparison.
With that being said, it’s still a very viable choice, especially if you wish to purchase from an authentic vegan brand.
Ora Organic Turmeric Supplement
Ora Organic, although a more expensive brand, is one we also love to recommend because they have transparent, eco-friendly, and ethical values.
Their turmeric supplement contains organic turmeric and organic black pepper extract, available in quite generous dosages.
It has 1200mg of turmeric (of which 250mg is organic turmeric extract) and 15mg of organic black pepper extract (10% of it is Bioperine).
Unlike the previous two supplements, it’s not as affordable, but it also has many customer reviews that back up the effectiveness and safety of the product.
Akin to the Future Kind turmeric supplement, you have to take more than one tablet to make up one serving, and for this supplement, that number is three.
This, naturally, is not good for people that do not enjoy swallowing pills, but it’s also worth mentioning that the tablet size is small, making the task a bit more effortless.
This is a pure, additive-free supplement, and while it’s certainly more expensive than others, you can make it 20% less expensive by subscribing to their recurring delivery service, which ranges from every month to every three months.
Mary Ruth’s Turmeric Supplement
This turmeric supplement by Mary Ruth’s is an optimal alternative for people that completely despise tablets/capsules and would like to ingest turmeric in a more effortless fashion.
This supplement contains 30 servings of pectin-based peach, mango, and lemon-flavored gummies that are delicious, and therefore, easy to digest.
Each serving contains 250mg of organic curcumin extract, so it’s low compared to the previous supplements.
Additionally, and unlike the previous supplements, it does not contain black pepper extract (or Bioperine), to increase the curcumin absorption, something that is recommended in scientific research.
We don’t believe that this supplement is superior to the other ones on this list, but it’s still a viable choice, particularly if you wish to avoid capsules/tablets.
What is Turmeric?
Turmeric is a root with medicinal properties. It is usually used in powder form to season meats or vegetables especially in India and eastern countries.
Besides having great antioxidant potential, turmeric can also be used as a natural remedy to improve gastrointestinal problems, fever, treat colds, and even reduce high cholesterol.
Turmeric is a plant with long shiny leaves about 60 cm long with long orange roots and it can be purchased in natural product stores, compounding pharmacies, and even in some local markets.
The main properties of turmeric are its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and digestive action, and therefore this plant has several benefits for the body, such as:
- Improve digestion;
- Helping in weight loss;
- Combat colds and flu;
- Preventing asthma attacks;
- Detoxify and treat liver problems;
- Regulate the intestinal flora
- Regulate cholesterol;
- Stimulate the immune system;
- Relieve skin inflammations such as eczema, acne, or psoriasis;
- Improve the natural anti-inflammatory response.
The active ingredient responsible for its medicinal potential is curcumin, which has been studied and used in the form of gel or ointment to treat skin wounds, such as burns, and it has shown great promise.
How To Choose A Turmeric Supplement
The problem with turmeric is that it has a poor absorption rate into the bloodstream, but often with supplements, it’s different because these include ingredients that enhance absorption.
A good turmeric supplement should include a high concentration of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) and a complementary ingredient that promotes its absorption rate.
It turns out that co-administering curcumin with piperine, the active ingredient in black pepper, can significantly increase curcumin bioavailability. 1
Therefore, good turmeric supplements will often contain Bioperine as a second ingredient.
Typically, turmeric supplements that contain turmeric extract rather than powdered turmeric, contain a higher concentration of curcumin, though that is not indicative of a better supplement.
As you probably already know, supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the same way as pharmaceuticals.
For that reason, it’s not advisable that you just go with any supplement that is promoted to you. More reputable and trustworthy companies often seek independent approval to ensure the product is safe and accurately described to consumers.
In other words, choosing supplements with third-party certifications or approval may help with avoiding low-quality products.
Finally, and this is also very important, you must choose a supplement that has the right dosage. Turmeric supplements are available in different dosages, which means that some supplements will contain more curcumin per capsule (or gummies) than other supplements.
Before you start taking a supplement be sure to speak to a health professional, especially if you’re taking other medication due to a present health concern.
Are There Negative Effects To Turmeric?
Turmeric has long been used in traditional eastern medicine as an anti-inflammatory, however, while it’s generally safe to consume, too much of it might have adverse effects.
Taking turmeric in unusually high doses can lead to mild side effects such as an upset stomach, acid reflux, diarrhea, dizziness, and headaches.
Other adverse effects include the formation of kidney stones, particularly because turmeric increases the levels of urinary oxalate.
Turmeric can also interact negatively with some forms of medication, namely blood thinners, antidepressants, antibiotics, antihistamines, cardiac medications, as well as diabetes medication.
However, studies suggest that turmeric supplements are generally well tolerated and not associated with negative health outcomes. 2
Allows us to also mention that the research that covers the effects of turmeric (or curcumin) on pregnant women is limited, therefore if you’re pregnant and wish to take a turmeric supplement, be sure to consult with a health professional first.
Also, consult with a health professional if you’re taking other forms of medication, particularly the ones we have mentioned above.
Do Turmeric Supplements Expire?
Generally, taking a dietary supplement that has expired won’t harm you, but they do lose their potency after they expire and, therefore, lose their effectiveness.
However, this might not be the case for all supplements, and some might actually be a good idea to throw away, particularly if they contain ingredients that truly get spoiled after their expiration date ends.
This is often the case with dairy ingredients, which turmeric supplements do not usually contain.
Turmeric supplements are often recommended for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric supplements, is touted for its many health benefits, which range from its potential to improve heart health, and even prevent Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, as turmeric is also riddled with antioxidant properties that fight off free radicals.
For those reasons and more, many people decide to take turmeric supplements, as it’s a natural and healthy way to include beneficial compounds into your diet.
