Urthbox is one of the many subscription boxes available on the market, and we can say it’s among the most popular next to ones like Sun Basket and Green Chef.
Naturally, you’re here because you don’t know what Urthbox has to offer— are the items in their box unique enough? Does it include a good variety of food items? Does the price justify the content of the box?
These are all questions that we hope to answer in this article so that we can help you determine whether or not Urthbox is actually worth its price tag.
What is Urthbox?
Urthbox is a health food subscription box service that caters to health enthusiasts by delivering organic and non-GMO snacks, beverages, and other goodies to your doorstep on a monthly basis, although you can also order it once if you wish to test the service.
Although it is now popular because it picked up the attention of giant media outlets such as TechCrunch and Forbes, that doesn’t mean the product is legitimately good.
A lot of times these media outlets are paid a commission or strike a sponsorship deal with these companies in exchange for publicity, so their reviews (or coverage) don’t really say much about the end product other than it is a box with healthy snacks. Forbes’ article on Urthbox has 300 words, so it doesn’t cover much.
If you would like to watch rather than read a Urthbox review, there is a good one on Youtube where the author compares Urthbox to Love with Food, also another health food subscription box.
In other words, the video will allow you to get a more tangible peek into what’s inside an Urthbox, which will certainly help you come to a conclusion.
Contrary to what one might think, Urthbox has actually been around for a while.
In fact, it was founded back in 2013 by Ben Behrouzi, and although some years have gone by, its mission has not changed. The goal has always been to find safe and healthy snack options while delivering them in a convenient fashion.
We live in a time and age where healthy eating is a hard achievement, particularly if we look at the obesity prevalence in Western countries.
In 2017 – 2018 the obesity prevalence in the US was 42.4%, which means that close to half of the US population was obese during that time period. This has not changed in the last few years.
An Urthbox subscription might help because it gives you convenient and health-conscious food options for home, office, or on the go.
Urthbox, like many other subscription services, contains an unexpected line-up of organic, all-natural, and non-GMO snacks, with some of them being vegan and gluten-free.
However, this does not mean you should finish an entire box in one go, as some of the snacks still contain calories and sugars, which can potentiate weight gain.
What you have, though, are more moderate snacks that can keep you from gaining unnecessary weight, and potentially losing weight if you combine a healthy diet and exercise.
Urthbox delivers these snacks monthly to an address of your choice, and you can sign up for 3 months, 6 months, or even an entire year, and depending on the size of the box you choose, you can get up to 40% discount (check the image below for a visual example).
The fact that you can choose between different sizes is great because it allows customers with a larger appetite for snacks to go for the biggest option, which generally comes with more than 27 snacks.
Other boxes (like the one from Vegan Cuts for example) only have one size, and that might not be appealing for some customers, so Urthbox has done a great job of widening their options, setting themselves apart from companies that limit their box sizes to one.
How Does Urthbox Work?
Urthbox sets itself apart by offering 4 different sizes and by including full-size products.
They follow strict sourcing, calorie, nutrition, and manufacturing standards, and have dedicated teams that look for unique products to include in their boxes every month.
Once you sign up for Urthbox, this is what happens:
- You get to choose between 4 different box sizes – mini (7+ products), small (14+ products), medium (20+ snacks), and large (27+ snacks).
- You also have to choose your plan length – monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly, or yearly.
- Select the type of subscription you want – classic box, gluten-free box, vegan box, and diet box.
- Wait until the box gets to the address of your choosing and start indulging in snacks, which means it’s a very convenient way to get healthy snacks.
- With each purchase, you can earn loyalty points that you can redeem in exchange for extra products.
Despite having to choose a plan length, you’re actually free to cancel the subscription at any time, so there’s really no risk involved in trying out a monthly subscription.
Also, be aware that these monthly subscriptions renew automatically on the first of the month, so if you wish to make a cancellation, do it before the month ends.
What’s Inside Urthbox?
UrthBox comes with a variety of health foods including granola, nuts and seeds, trail mixes, superfoods, as well as dried fruits and vegetables.
They also include junk food with a healthy spin, for example, we’ve seen cookies, snack bars, chips, sweets, and chocolates that are less refined and pack more nutrients. However, you should still be moderate when consuming them, as they’re still caloric and may lead to weight gain.
Urthbox also has juices, cleanses, shakes and smoothies but they might not always come in a box, and the same goes for every other product – as Urthbox tries to mix everything up on a monthly basis.
These products we have just mentioned are not cheap – in fact, a lot of the brands inside Urthbox tend to be quite expensive as they are comprised of organic, non-GMO ingredients and often have different certificates, which also increases the end cost of the product.
How Much Does It Cost?
Urthbox does many things right, but I guess what makes people jump over the edge is the actual pricing, which makes all the difference.
They have classic, gluten-free, vegan, and diet boxes available in four sizes:
- Mini: 7+ snacks for $14.99/month
- Small: 14+ snacks for $29.99/month (save 20%)
- Medium: 20+ snacks for $39.99/month (save 30%)
- Large: 27+ snacks for $49.99/month (save 40%)
The larger the box you choose, the bigger is the discount. This is a great opportunity if you want to buy snacks for the family, however, you don’t want to buy several boxes (which would make everything more expensive).
Here is a quick table comparing the prices of Urthbox with competitors:
|Subscription Box:||Cheapest Offer:||Price:|
|Urthbox||Mini Box (7+ snacks)||$14.99|
|SnackSack||Classic Box (11+ snacks)||$27.95|
|Vegan Cuts||Classic Box (10+ snacks)||$24.95|
Keep in mind that both SnackSack and Vegan Cuts only have a one-size offer, whilst Urthbox has several box sizes (4 to be concise), and that gives you the opportunity to order a bigger box size – diluting the cost per snack and making it lower than the other boxes listed above.
This is, of course, if you’re in a larger household where ordering a bigger box would make logical sense.
Customer Reviews: What Do People Think About Urthbox?
Frankly, I don’t trust customer reviews, particularly when those reviews are on the actual website of the brand you’re questioning.
While it’s not ethical, it’s not unusual for brands to forge customer reviews on their own website.
Fortunately, Urthbox is a serious brand because it has its profile on Trustpilot, a website where fake reviews are likely to sway your opinion.
According to Trustpilot, Urthbox has a 4.1/5 rating, which is a positive rating but not positive enough to expect a blissful experience every time a customer orders a product. No business is perfect, but we still want to be able to ensure that the product we receive at our doorstep isn’t flawed.
At the time I wrote this review, Urthbox had 894 customers reviews, 70% of which are excellent, 9% are great, 2% are average, 2% are poor, and the remaining 17% are bad.
Let’s look at both sides of the coin and see what some of the reviews have to say.
One review says the following:
Not only does the customer praise the content inside the box (and how novel the items were), but she also praises their customer service, even using the word top-notch.
Unfortunately, I also found less positive reviews, with one customer stating the following:
Generally, people who write bad reviews tend to be more emotionally involved, so the content of the review is much more likely to damage the company’s reputation.
For this particular review, we can see that the company not only has missed its delivery date, but it also kept charging the customer despite him having canceled the subscription.
There are many other bad reviews that paint a similar scenario and describe their renewal service as being sketchy, so I would definitely be wary while ordering from this company.
If you wish to read more reviews, I would recommend you to read their Trustpilot profile – as it seems to paint a more realistic picture of how Urthbox treats its customers.
Is Urthbox Worth It?
Compared to other similar subscription boxes, Urthbox seems to have a lot more to offer – particularly because it doesn’t stick to one box size.
Urthbox actually offers 4 different box sizes, including a Mini, a Small, a Medium, and a Large. If you opt for the larger boxes sizes you get bigger discounts, so the cost per snack actually lowers.
With that being said, I’m worried that Urthbox might not be consistent in keeping their customers happy, especially when you go through some of their reviews on Trustpilot, many of which question the company’s practices – including their poor customer service.
However, do take this with a grain of salt. Urthbox has a 4.1/5 rating, which is mostly positive, and may mean that the company is really making an effort to provide a great product and service.
Canceling Your Urthbox Subscription
One thing to remember (before you actually order from Urthbox) is that all subscriptions get automatically renewed – so if you only wish to order one box, you should still apply for cancelation by sending an email to their customer support, otherwise, they’ll just keep charging you.
A cancelation request must be put forward before the next renewal billing charge, which is usually before the first of the month. First-time customers also have a 24-hour cancellation window, which means that past that window there are no refunds for the initial order.
Are All Urthbox Products Vegan and Gluten-Free?
There are four types of boxes available: Classic, Gluten-Free, Vegan, and Diet Boxes.
If you choose a Gluten-Free Box, you’ll get gluten-free snacks, and if you opt for a Vegan Box, you’ll typically only get vegan snacks.
Urthbox cannot guarantee that all products are free from trace elements of gluten or animal products, particularly because of the facilities used by manufacturers, and while this may be okay for some vegans, it surely isn’t okay for people with celiac disease.
Therefore, Urthbox always encourages customers to read labels and packaging before consuming any given product because they could send you non-vegan products or those containing gluten by mistake.
Using Urthbox Points
The more your order, the more points your earn. That also means you’re able to reedeem those points for products at the Urthmarket, which is a partner store they have specifically for that purpose.
Once you’ve got your Urthbox and Urthmarket login details, you have to send an email to customer support so that they can transfer your subscription points over to Urthmarket for you to redeem.
Urthbox offers free shipping in the United States but if you’re ordering from Canada, you’ll have to pay a $6.95 shipping fee. Orders are usually shipped mid-month, and new orders are shipped within the following calendar month. All orders come with a tracking number.
