Is Angel Delight Vegan? Here’s What I’ve Found

Angel Delight is a dessert that has delighted taste buds in the United Kingdom for generations.

As a light, fluffy, and sweet treat, it’s a firm favorite for many, so if you’ve recently adopted a vegan diet, you might be wondering whether you can still have it.

To answer succinctly, no, Angel Delight is not vegan-friendly due to its use of milk powder, and this is true for all varieties.

This article will delve deeper into the ingredients of Angel Delight, as well as provide you with a brief rundown of Angel Delight.

A Brief History of Angel Delight

First introduced to the world by the Bird’s company in 1967, Angel Delight debuted with a strawberries-and-cream flavor that immediately won hearts.

The dessert quickly gained popularity, and by the 1970s, Bird’s had effectively doubled the market for instant desserts.

Despite experiencing a dip in popularity during the 1980s, Angel Delight saw a revival in 1999, thanks to a promotional campaign featuring the beloved characters, Wallace & Gromit. In 2006, it was the best-selling product in the UK’s instant cold dessert sector.

Today, Angel Delight is a product of Premier Foods and continues to be a household favorite. In fact, in a 2015 survey conducted by Food Network, the dessert was named Britain’s ‘favorite childhood dish’.

In its current form, Angel Delight is available in five flavors: strawberry, butterscotch, chocolate, mint chocolate, and banana. No added sugar variants of the butterscotch, white chocolate, and strawberry flavors are also sold.

Over the years, Angel Delight has experimented with many flavors, some of which have since been discontinued.

These include coffee, tea, coffee walnut, black cherry, blueberry, peach, lime, lemon, blackcurrant, bubblegum, tangerine, vanilla ice cream, forest fruits, popcorn, candy floss, butter mint, and raspberry.

The brand has also introduced various quantity variants to cater to different needs: four-serving packets, twelve-serving tubs, and single-serving ready-to-eat cups, the latter being launched in 2017 as part of an effort to modernize the brand and appeal to today’s different customer needs.

Angel Delight and Veganism

Unfortunately, Angel Delight is not vegan-friendly, primarily for two reasons.

First, the dessert contains milk powder, an ingredient derived from animal milk.

This naturally makes it unsuitable for those following a vegan diet, which excludes all forms of animal products and exploitation.

Second, Angel Delight requires the use of cow’s milk to achieve the right consistency.

Attempts to use plant-based alternatives like soy, oat, or almond milk have proven unsuccessful as they do not bind the mixture together as effectively.

While Angel Delight is not compatible with a vegan diet, it’s worth noting that it is suitable for vegetarians.

The dessert does not contain gelatin, an animal-derived ingredient often used in desserts and candies that many vegetarians avoid.
