It’s always best to speak with your doctor or a certified medical professional before making any changes to your lifestyle, diet, or exercise routine, or trying a new supplement.

Performance Lab Sport BCAA is a branched-chain amino acid supplement. I’m covering this supplement because it’s delivered in a vegan-friendly form, and it’s actually included in our list of the best vegan BCAA supplements.

If you’re searching for a BCAA supplement, then you’re probably going to the gym, and want to gain an edge that will allow you to gain more muscle mass, prevent muscle loss, improve fatigue, or improve your recovery rate. This article is focused on the Sport BCAA supplement, and we’re going to cover some of the most important aspects of it like the ingredients and doses.

I’m also going to look at other things like the number servings, as well as price. Even though the supplement may be effective, perhaps you’re able to find a formula that is equally effective but at a more affordable price. If that’s the case, then we’re also going to include other BCAA suggestions.

Before we get started, it’s important to understand that these supplements do not work on their own. They’re not intended to replace a varied diet or healthy lifestyle, and you also may need to be committed to a workout routine. If you have those in check, then it’s likely that you’ll experience better results by taking a BCAA supplement.

That said, let’s go over the Performance Lab Sport BCAA supplement:

Performance Lab Sport BCAA: Introduction

Performance Lab Sport BCAA is a branched-chain amino acid supplement with 120 vegan-friendly easy to swallow capsules made from cultured tapioca, a natural prebiotic fiber.

It’s developed by the UK-based company Optinutra, which also manufactures a number of other supplements, including multivitamins, pre-workout supplements, and the extremely popular nootropic, Mind Lab Pro.

According to Optinutra, Performance Lab Sport BCAA is a clean, effective, and innovative supplement designed for peak performance, vibrant health, and fully optimized potential.

It’s crafted using nutritional technology such as Ajipure® and NutriGenesis®. According to the manufacturer, ingredients refined with this technology are unmatched in terms of purity, safety, and efficacy. They don’t use any animal ingredients, fillers, or shortcuts, and the ingredients are milled time and time again into a very fine powder for increased solubility and absorption.

The Performance Lab Sport BCAA is comprised of a simple formula: three branch-chained amino acids that are associated with benefits such as increased muscle gain decreased fatigue and an overall better recovery post-workout. These amino acids are essential because they can’t be formulated by our bodies, and so they must be obtained via food or supplementation.

What Are The Ingredients?

Akin to many BCAA supplements, Performance Lab Sport BCAA provides you with the three branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine.

They’re delivered in the optimal research-backed 2:1:1 ratio, which is essentially what’s used in clinical studies to reproduce beneficial results.

L-Leucine (1500mg)

Leucine is considered to be the primary and most prevalent branched-chain amino acid. Leucine activates the protein known as mTOR, which then induces muscle protein synthesis, as well as cell growth and proliferation.

Research demonstrates that adding leucine (in isolation) to a diet or test meal can reliably increase muscle protein synthesis, especially in individuals with lower dietary protein intake and the elderly (who have limited capacity to produce muscle protein synthesis via diet).

There’s an active metabolite in leucine called HMB that reduces muscle breakdown, proving that leucine intake can also be useful in weight loss diets to minimize muscle wasting.

L-Isoleucine (750mg)

Isoleucine is also one of the three branched-chain amino acids and is often associated with its ability to help in the reduction of muscle damage.

However, there’s little evidence to support that fact.

A recent systematic review shows that there is no direct evidence of the positive effects of BCAAs on muscle damage, except in very specific conditions. You would need to take 200mg of BCAAs per kilogram of body weight daily for a long period of time.

That being said, there’s enough evidence to suggest that isoleucine is able to increase the amount of glucose consumed during exercise, and it also seems to act as an anti-catabolic agent.

Also, isoleucine also seems to have an impact on fatigue.

A clinical study published in the Journal of Nutrition shows that BCAA intake resulted in lower rates of perceived exertion and mental fatigue during a standardized cycle ergometer exercise.

According to the study, BCAA intake decreases the transportation of tryptophan to the brain and also decreases 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) synthesis. Both are responsible for inducing fatigue.

Valine (750mg)

Valine is claimed to offer several benefits, including energy enhancement, increased endurance, as well as muscle tissue recovery and repair.

A clinical study published in 2017 shows that acute oral supplementation of BCAA’s at a concentration of 0.087 g/kg body mass was sufficient to increase the rate of recovery in isometric strength, CMJ height (countermovement jump), and perceived soreness.

Additionally, a study published in 2018 by the scientific journal Bioscience found that acute supplementation of valine lead to fatigue reduction in rats performing swimming exercises.

However, keep in mind that those results may not translate equally to humans.

Performance Lab Sport BCAA: Are The Claims Real?

Performance Lab claims that consuming their BCAA can lead to the following benefits:

  • Accelerated muscle growth
  • Extended athletic endurance
  • Increased energy and muscle strength
  • Muscle soreness reduction

According to the ingredients we have just reviewed, the clinical evidence suggests that such benefits are indeed possible. In other words, Optinutra doesn’t seem to make wild claims (akin to certain companies), and that is a sign of a good, ethical, and transparent company.

Side Effects & How To Take It

In general, most BCAA supplements should be safe in the short and medium-term.

However, according to sources like WebMD, when taken up to two years, BCAA consumption can lead to side effects such as fatigue and loss of coordination. As a result, you should be cautious about its consumption if you decide to take it for a prolonged timeframe.

BCAA’s may also cause minor side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach bloating. In the rarest of cases, BCAA intake may cause high blood pressure, headache, or skin whitening. For that reason, it’s recommended that you consult a doctor or a physician to determine whether or not you should be taking BCAA supplements.

According to Optinutra, for the best results, you should take 2-4 BCAA Nutricaps 45-60 minutes pre-workout and 2-4 immediately post-workout. During intense training, you may also want to take an additional 2-4 Nutricaps.

Is Performance Lab Sport BCAA Worth It?

Performance Lab Sport is our #2 pick in our list of best vegan BCAA supplements. If you’re planning to purchase it, I don’t think you’ll regret it.

The supplement itself offers you an effective, optimized formula that is transparent and clean.

The only aspect of this supplement that I don’t enjoy is the fact you’re required to take 6 Nutricaps to get a full serving. That, to me, seems like a lot. It may derange people that don’t enjoy swallowing capsules from actually purchasing the supplement. Each bottle comes with 30 servings, so it should suffice for a month’s worth of BCAAs.

Other than that, there’s really nothing negative about it. Performance Lab Sport is free from soy, egg, fish, shellfish, dairy, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, or other allergens. It’s also non-GMO, non-irradiated, and gluten-free. You also won’t find any synthetic additives, caffeine, artificial colors, and preservatives. It’s also been tested for banned substances, so if you’re an athlete looking for a good BCAA supplement, Performance Lab Sport is worth it.

Alternative: Transparent Labs CoreSeries BCAA

The CoreSeries BCAA by Transparent Labs is our supplement of choice.

Since you merely require to take one scoop mixed with water, it’s way more convenient in terms of guaranteeing a proper intake each day. We’ve seen that Performance Lab Sport requires you to take 6 capsules to make up one serving, and I believe that might not appeal to most people.

Even though they both share the same 2:1:1 ratio, the CoreSeries BCAA seems to contain more leucine (4,000mg), isoleucine (2,000mg), and valine (2,000mg) per serving. Aside from the BCAA content, it also contains other ingredients such as L-Glutamine and Coconut Water Powder.

Glutamine is a naturally occurring nonessential amino acid that may play an important role in protein synthesis, since it may inhibit protein breakdown and increase protein synthesis. It also appears to be an effective intestinal and immune system health compound, helping maintain a protective barrier between your intestines and the rest of your body. It’s useful to protect you against conditions such as a leaky gut.

Coconut Water Powder, on the other hand, is an exceptional ingredient that is associated with a wealth of benefits. It’s among the richest sources of electrolytes. Throughout a workout, you lose electrolytes or minerals that must be replenished through food, water, or supplements.

Coconut Water Powder contains five different electrolytes your body needs to function: potassium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, and calcium. It’s a wonderful recovery formula.

To make things more interesting, this CoreSeries BCAA also contains a number of different flavors, including blue raspberry, orange, tropical punch, strawberry lemonade, green apple, and sour grape — which certainly ought to make your experience more pleasant.

My Final Thoughts

With all that being said, Performance Lab BCAA is a supplement that is a notch above many, and Optinutra (the manufacturer) did a very good job of creating a clean, transparent supplement.

If you want to increase your dietary intake of branched-chain amino acids and earn an edge pre, during, and post-workout, it’s supplement does seem to be effective. To me, the downside lies in the fact that you have to take a ton of capsules in one serving, which isn’t ideal.

In addition, the supplement isn’t exactly the cheapest out there, but that’s understandable considering Optinutra’s commitment to testing and the use of high-end technology to guarantee the highest level of purity, efficacy, and safety in every ingredient.

Top 2 Vegan Recommendations in 2021

  1. This is hands down our favorite vegan supplement. It’s not your typical multivitamin because it was created from vegans to vegans. It contains vitamin B12, vitamin D, and the Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA). These ingredients are delivered in the right doses, so that you never have to worry about a potential deficiency in the future. Feel free to read my review on the supplement as well.
  2. Our second recommendation is this amazing vegan starter kit. It is actually a bundle with 9 e-books that will help you lead a healthy, vegan lifestyle. It has great advice, and it includes print-outs and checklists that will allow you to easily put theory into practice, particularly if you’re new to the vegan lifestyle. This is a recommendation I’ve also included in my essential vegan products page as well.
